Default My friends $150 junkyard turbo setup (caution: lots of pics)

Here are some pics of my friends current project. 8x CRX with a 93 z6 swap. Pretty much barebones, with only an RPM swith with stock si ecu/etc. He's building a junkyard turbo setup, and has only spent $150 so far includeing the turbo and all the fittings. Sure the manifold was welded and will probably crack, and sure it looks crappy but he's doing it mostly as a learning experiance. I just snapped these pics tonight, hopefully in a few days he should have all the piping hooked up. And yeah, i already told him he's ****** nuts

Hehe, the junkyard turbo set-up. Is that an HF Manifold? What kind of intercooler/was A/C retained? Looks pretty good, I'd like to see how much power it makes on the Z6. What CRXBart said too.

Does your friend have a spare motor? Maybe he will be the next Abaz (guy on another board who blew up 4 or so motors with his homemade set-ups-mostly for fun).

I dont like the looks of that oil drain line. It looks like the oil has to travel down and then back up to enter the oil pan.

Nice Work, May I ask what the hell he used to adapt the manifold to the turbo? is that a fatty weld? or is their a plate somewhere in their?

Its a Civic STD manifold.. you can tell by the imprint #3 on exhaust runner #4

Once he gets everything dialed in, do you guys mind taking some pics and I can post them on my website?

is that a Vg30 turbo? 300zx?

He got the original manifold from the car he took the turbo from (cant remember what kinda car/turbo) and cut the flange off of it. The flange was welded to a plate, and the plate to the civic manifold.

******* ingenius. Seriously. That's always good to see...someone using SENSE more than dollars.

I always love a good boneyard build-up car that can run with the guys who spend a LOT of money on their cars and talk **** about how bad-*** they are.

I didnt want to take any chances on my 14b turbo.. So I welded it and used fasteners..

Btw, what kind of turbo is that anyways? is it a 300zx turbo? vg30?

Abaz did you use copper or plain weldings?

I'm still figuring out a good method to combine a D-series turbo manifold with my B-series manifold.....

no, but he really didnt get a chance to drive it yet. only around the block a few times. But, i dont think it will be a problem. The turbo is fairly small, and his stock coolant system is in excellent condition.

Nah, he blew up his motor, and we still cant figure out why. We are still stumped on what the problem is.. My personal opinion is, that the wastegate is just fucked up. My buddie thinks the manifold he modified (drag) got fucked up. I dont know. He is buying a new Rev hard manifold, hopfully it will work out

Modified Drag manifold, so you can mount a T3/04e in a CRX.

T3/04e vs a little saab turbo.. We tried the saab turbo thinking it was bad. It probably would have just worked fine.

I update my site once in a while so keep a eye out.

~How is your car running? havent seen the hatch out at all latly

----

I have never had a problem with my cooling system after I turbocharged my crx. Maybe on a warm summer day at idle it might be a bit warmer. But its not bad.

----

The welds were done with a mig welder at my work, flux wire was used. Nothing fancy.

----

So Ninja can you tell me what kind of turbo that is??
