ok i took my 4dr dx to get smogged to day and the guy at the smog station said he could not smog the car because it has a vtec swap. has anyone else in socal had this problem. and the guy told me that i had to go see the ref because of the swap. hell if i knew it was going to be this much of a problem i would of just put a ls swap in the car i only went with the 1.6 sohc because i did not want to have any smog issues
Man...I would try to go see another smog guy who will do it for you. That is unless that guy already reported you in the system. Then you're in a rough position. You could try to talk to a ref (w/out your car present so he doesn't throw it on the machine) and see what the rules are for having that motor in your model car. I think that rule is that if the motor is the same year or newer and it was available in the U.S. and is a USDM motor then you can register it as the vehicle that was origionally equiped with that motor. I've known a few people who have 92-95 civics and thier registration shows that they are GSR's because they have a USDM GSR swap. It is an enormous pain in the *** I'm told though. Good luck with that.

what i don't get is how can the smog guy tell if a car is a dx or ex model it does not say it on the title or the registration and there are no badges on the car that say what the car is. i think the smog guy just saw vtec and the red valve cover and thinks its a swap, and thats why he said what he said. but i am going to try a different place tomorrow. but what did u mean by putting me in the system as having a swap never heard of this

This is in regards to him already trying to perform the test. If he tries to do the test and you fail, you go in the system as failing. If he didn't even hook your car up then you don't have to worry about it. He could probably tell if he checked the VIN# but if he didn't then he was just being an ***. There are a lot of smog guys who don't want to get in trouble with illegal smog jobs because they can lose their license to perform tests if caught.

i dunno why he couldnt smog it. 92 civics came with sohc vtec so its considered "engine replacement" and you dont need to go to the ref for that. go back and tell him to read the smog manual again.
he is right you do need to see a ref and get a bar sticker. if you would have swapped out another no vtec motor you would have been(if its was same year or newer) ok but since its vtec you need the sticker.
he was most likely able to tell what motor was originally in there byt the VIN code.

Did you take it somewhere else? If you did how'd it go?
