Default First time mig welding what do you think ?

Scroll down for new pics

Well I picked up a lincoln mig 100 today from a friend, great price and it says it can weld up to 1/4 inch of steel. I don't have gas attached to it yet. I also attached some of my high school arc and gas welds.

turn up the heat, make sure you are grounded well, and dude, it looks like you are using flux core, that **** is for the birds, get something that shields the weld...oh and practice a WHOLE LOT

EDIT.. looks liek you aren't using anything at all, stop welding till you get gas

I know they don't look great, it was my first time. Here is a gas weld I did in high school.

Just practice your hand movements because if you don't have that down even if you get gas it might not be that great.

there are some flux pics in here...I did that with a mig pak 100 which I think is the same as yours

well I think your trying to weld alittle to much metal for a 110, if your going to do 1/4 I would go all the way up on everything or be smart and get a 220

... keep practicing though, you will get better

Cool I'll check it out, I'm gonna try on some thinner metal soon, how do you like the mig pak 100 ? I think its a good welder, I mean it can weld some thick stuff that other machines can't . Is there any metal I should look out for ? Like that will produce deadly fumes ? 220 is out of the question, I beleive this can handle 1/4 later on when I do get better. I have some really thing sheet metal, what should I look out when welding on this ?

How do these look ? I really don't care about looking pretty, I mean does it look like I need more heat ?

Does it look like I need more heat ???

yes.
you got almost zero penetration there.

start with some thinner stuff to learn , and for gods sake clean the metal at least a little.

it makes it so much easier.

The metal is clean, in the pic its not thats because I just took the pic after the weld. So does the wire speed look ok ?

Did you do this with GAS this time? At least there's no splatter. that mettal looks like its more than a 1/4' thick.

He told me that he used the gasless to do that weld... unfortunately it looks waaaaay too clean to be done without gas, especially compared to his previous work. something isn't quite right about that to me.... but who knows... lol.

no gas I swear, I could take a pic of the machine. These welds were the best welds of the day though, I tried turning up the heat and it seemed to get the weld done but it also seemed to melt the metal, is this ideal ? Also I am trying to weld 22 gauge sheet metal, I have it set at the lowest temp and its burning holes right threw it. Should I try turning up the wire speed ? Also can the welds be so clean up above because they did not penetrate good ?

thin sheet metal is difficult to weld.

I like autodarkening helmets for doing this, much eaiser. Thin sheet metal must be tack welded only. You will NEVER lay a bead over it. (Unless skilled at GTAW) Anyways. You want to start with Quick quick tacks, over and over in the same spot. Do 3 or 4 untill you acomplish what you want. good way to weld is to drill... I think it was 3/16" holes in the metal, and lay it over your angle and fill the hole. This way you can turn up the heat a bit, concentrate in the middle and it will puddle to the edges and grab the sheet metal.

Tuesday ill have some time and lay down some Multipass And single pass 220V T joints. Ill do some flat lap joints also. And a bead of each electrode (7018, 7011, 7014, 6013, 6010, and 6011) and ill will label everything.

Then you will get EXAMPLES of what is should look like, not just people who probably cant weld at all themselves telling you its wrong.

Hamilton thanks, that metal, the last pics are not 1/4 thick.

looks like your changing speeds and angles. the top and bottom look good at the beginning but looks like you sped up down the line and started going off the line.

just keep a steady hand, or use both, and move straight as you can and slow at a single pace keeping your puddle circular or semi oval. <-also applies to SMAW (stick) you can run circles or stitching, but running slow and straight like a robot will make a nice pretty bead till you get into putting motion with the gun.

oh yeah, and just try different amps and run few beads at different heats to see how they lay and penetrate or not. you need to learn to do this cuz it'll be different most apps and see what it should look like before you have to weld a lot of something.

Those are from high school with an arc welder so I really can't change anything because I no longer have access to an arc welder.

oh my bad. still applies then to the gmaw's above, that you need more control. watch and learn how to control the puddle. play with the heat though to actually be able to see what is too hot, not hot enough, and just right. you'll get it soon

Been playing with the heat and it really seems to be burning threw the metal after I turned it up, what about wire speed. Anyone have any like tips on when to increase and decrease speed ?

If you can feel the wire hitting then melting, hitting then melting, your speed is too fast. Besides that you just have to move along as fast as it will let you while still getting good penetration. It's something you're just going to have to learn. The biggest things I had to learn were, pause at the beginning to get the heat soaked and make sure the piece is very clean. Also, I have .030 in the gun right now and I'm not doing much work that needs that, I'm switching to .023.

wire speed is penetration
voltage is heat

.023 is too small for anything except bodywork.
