I might work...but isnt the safest! A cars suspension is designed to carry a payload or tow a trailer as a truck or SUV is, plus you have to think about braking and also the size of a WRX compared to a truck... do you really wanna have a trailer behing your WRX when a gust of wind hits, that car is going to be tossed all over the road!
subaru rates the wrx/STi having a max towing capacity of 2000 lbs. and from the things i hear, you dont want to be close to that either, but i have no experience towing with my suby.
There was a big discussion on the subaru forum on this. Will it? Yes, it will. It's rated at around 3-4K lbs in Europe... and it's the same damn car.
One of the differences is in Europe, moste highways have different speed limits depending on what you're driving. If you're towing in a car, you're limited to around 50mph (and everyone respects that there). Over here, you're going to be going with the flow of traffic (around 70-80) towing... and going slower (say the 50mph), you're considered a hazard. Going 70-80 wouldn't be that safe with a 2500 lb tow and 50 is much safer.
So can it? Yes it can. But becuase of the speed limits seen here in the US, Subaru (ie; their lawyers) can't guarantee your safety if you go over 2000 lbs at 70 mph.

I would highly not recommend it for reasons mentioned above. Brakes aren't up to snuff for stopping THAT much weight. Forcing a high-pressure turbo car to run boost at low throttle opening shoots the EGTs up in a hurry too.
