Default burning oil above 6k?

whenever i take my GSR past 6000-7000 RPM, a huge puff of blue smoke shoots out. the car does have EXTREMELY high miles on it, i'm just wondering if the piston rings could be worn down, or maybe a valve problem? it runs fine and theres no power loss, just burns oil like crazy.

Huge puff=bad, I personally use about 1/2qt per 1000 miles, but I dont set any huge puffs of smoke either.

Some oil consumption, especially on a high-mileage car, is expected. My '95 120,xxx mile GSR usually lets out a puff of smoke when I get heavy on the gas -- nothing major, but, nonetheless, unsettling when first noticed. Chances are, it's some oil getting past the valve seals under high-load/heavy-acceleration.

If I'm hitting vtec and pounding the redline a lot (which I am -- I love my honda ), I might use as much as a quart of oil in between oil changes, or maybe ~1/2 quart every 1k miles, as mentioned above.

When you're smoking constantly, then you should be worried. And if you are still paranoid, take it for a leakdown test.

thanks i was just wondering if i should be worried or not. i know some oil consumption is normal, but out of the 4 honda's i've owned, i've never seen a puff of smoke in VTEC. i'll definitely take it in for a compression and leakdown test since it has such high miles.

You say a big puff of blue smoke? When oil burns you get a white puff of smoke and also burning of oil gives off a very distinct and horrible smell. And exactly how high is your mileage and how often do you change the oil? Also, do you run it pretty hard? But I wouldnt feel bad if it is indeed burning oil because it is very typical of honda motors to burn oil a little before 100,000 miles or after.just make sure to check the oil more often.

you're thinking of coolant. oil is a blue smoke. when coolant burns it gives off a white steam/smoke with a distinct smell.

anyhoo...the car has abouit 178,000 miles on it. the person who owned it before me commuted between SLC, Utah and Twin Falls, Idaho about twice a week since they bought it brand new in '98, so the majority of those miles are highway. this is why i'm worried that it might be the piston rings.

i also change the oil in my cars about every 3,000-3,500 miles...i bought this car 2,000 miles ago and the oil had just been changed, but i plan on changing it this week just to be safe.
