Default ported or sealed?

hi would it be better to have 2 10" alpine type E's in a sealed or ported box, with a alpine mrp-m200 amp. like which one would be louder?
sorry for the noob question

If you build the box with the correct air size and port sizing, then the ported box would have a slightly higher dB output, but it would loose out in the low end bass (really deep). The sealed box will have a better range into the deep bass, but won't be quite as loud.

..if the ported doesn't sound better than the sealed one, it's not properly tuned.

A properly tuned box,[port] will have a lower F3 point, will be louder, or use less watts to get to the same SPL, that said, a sealed box is easy to make, 10% up or down in air volume will not hurt, but getting a ported box tuned right can be a pain, I do mine in the car, have found that lenth of port can vary +/- an inch or so from my box programs to when I put the box in the car,[loading I think] 94

I personally perfer sealed because i feel it is punchier and cleaner, but possibly i didnt have it tuned right? I dunno. I think ported is overall louder though.

if you're not looking to spend big $$, time, and SPL competition time,

go with sealed

if u just want it to thump get bandpass. bandass isnt very accuracte tho. sealed is the best all around. ported needs more watts to go deep imo. i have 2 12's kicker in a sealed and its super clear. u might need bandpass cuz type E's might not soudn good in sealed

i went from sealed to ported when i had my JL AUDIO 10W7.

i probably will never do sealed again.

ported was better overall with the same amp (500/1)
and NO bass boost with ported versus sealed.

sealed box was made to jl's specs.

ported box to vteg's specs
that could have something to do with it

I feel I should comment on this.

There is good reason to use a ported enclosure in home theater applications. It will provide great output, and a shallower rolloff on the low end (before tuning frequency) to properly match the average home theater's room-gain (transfer function).

For a car, though, this type of flatter anechoic frequency response will generate an audible "hump" in the graph (Decibel vs. Frequency graph, AKA Frequency response graph). Why? The car is a smaller environment: a smaller room will generally boost lower frequencies a great deal... an estimation, for compact cars, is about 12db/octave with +3db point starting at 50-60hz. This can translate into 20+ db of boost below 30hz. Some people like this "one-note" accentuation, but for SQ purposes, a bass-EQ is necessary.

Fortunately for us, sealed enclosures exhibit a low-end rolloff nearly opposite to the cabin-gain seen in vehicles ---> Sealed enclosures will generally give us a flatter curve.

Additional benefits of going sealed:

LOWER bass (Ported enclosures won't effectively play too far below their tuning frequency; Using some headphones, I can hear below 20hz given enough output...and we all can FEEL it - it's rare in music, but it's there)

No Subsonic Filter required - Below tuning frequency a subsonic filter is needed to protect the subwoofer...the cone looses control otherwise and may over-excurse.

Easier/Smaller: Sealed enclosure are less sensitive to T/S parameter misalignment (Basically that an enclosure's volume needn't be EXACT); sealed enclosures require less space. There's much less work in tuning a sealed bass system; no concern for the phase-shift / group delay graphs to ensure that you're not doing something stupid (below about 25ms isn't too audible)...no concern for port length and vent-air velocity...lower build cost... generally less EQ'ing required (or no EQ at all).

I'm going to suggest that one go for ported only if they need the output, and/or if they have a capable bass EQ (1/3 octave from 25-80 or so), if they enjoy the accentuated sound, if they have the extra space...

Ported Enclosures CAN retain the SQ of sealed, just depends on application and effort.

Ever consider a good bandpass box?

I'd say check their website and go with their specs. They know what type of boxes their subs go with, and they give you dimensions and a blue print of how the box should be.

Me, personally, I'd go with a rectangle port with it's own path and polyfill on the inner walls.

definately go with sealed from my experience. It gives a much cleaner, and even deeper sound.
