Did you have a 90k service done? If not, along with the timing belt (which will include water pump) there's more to be done. Just go by your owner's manual or go to a dealership or authorized Honda service shop and asked for a 90k service plus timing belt service. This is assuming you do not do your own work. Also, bring lotsa cash or a credit card cuz you're gonna pay

And remember that the two most likely big problems you will have someday soon will be the main relay(it will usually have trouble starting when the motor is hot on hot days as a first sign), or the igniter.

What is an igniter ??

I have never heard of one for a car, but we do have one for the hot water heater.
Which motor are you speaking of ?? The starter or the alternator ??

The '97 is our second, replacing the troublesome '88 ( idling too fast)

A far as the service goes, this seems to be a neglected car - when the belt does break, will the tears cause another malfunction ??

Find a good "indie" or do it yourself; stay away from the stealerships !

Some carmakers call it an ignition amplifier.

The 'main relay' is a couple relays combined into the same case. Supplies power to the engine computer, fuel injectors, & fuel pump.

Belt breaking = bad, very bad!
You should hope your car is standing still when it happens.

If you still have your manual, the maintenance schedule will be in there. be sure to pay attention to the time portion of it rather than the mileage, since the miles seem a little low. In fact, you might consider "zeroing it out", doing everything to get it to a baseline, then start following the schedule from the start again.

Just did my 105k service. Included the oil change, front end inspection, water pump replacement, all belts changed out and other smaller things. Cost was $499.95 pre-tax. My dealer has a couple web sites (their own and the service reminder service) where I was able to pull out coupons and discounts. Saved me $50 total plus the cost of a loaner (since they don't loan their own cars and they use Enterprise).

I believe te 90k is a big service including tranny service and plug and wire changes along with gasket replacement.

I don't necessarily agree with the length of time over mileage since the car gets used more so in the shorter amount of time, things are more likely to wear quicker and you need to keep on top of it. True, the belts won't dry-rot over the shortened time but the mileage stretches out the belts requiring them to be replaced.

I've got 110k in just over 3 years and am keeping on top of this maintenance schedule. My old car (a POS Dodge) had it's timing belt go @ 27k. Luckily, no valve damage due to the slow speed I was going.
