Default Stock low-end B20Vtec users?

Im about to order a new motor from HMO, and the B20B caught my eye. It was either the B20 or the LS. Well anyways, I was curious how many people are making decent power on stock low-ends on the B20B's.

I have a Vtec head that I can rebuild while I just drive around with the B20. I was shooting for the 160-175 whp area. I dont plan on spinning the motor that high (in excess of 8400-8500), and I will get ARP rod bolts for added security of spinning that high.

I was just curious how manu people are using stock low ends on the B20?

Thanks,
Eric

PS: Yes I searched, I came up with mostly B20Z results.

eric, you should be able to hit 160whp with the vtec head on the b20b block, it all depends on what cams you use. i actually had a friend of mine running a b20b bottomend, b16 head, and ctr cams. if i can remember right, he hit low to mid 170's, and 140ft/tq to the wheels spinning it to 7800-8000rpms! good luck!

hey yeah i have a stock b20b bottom end mated to stock b16a2 head. I dynoed it with 155whp and 127tq. I have fuel regulator and a gauge, adjustable cam gears and short ram intake. I still have stock exhaust and header. I just got Hondata so i will be tuning my engine here soon with that. I am hoping now to make 165-170whp and 140trq. Also on that dyno run i used a JDM pr3 ecu with a 8500 rpm redline and they were all 3rd gear pulls on the dyno. I didnt make power past 7200rpms due to my stock internals. If you have any question let me know. I also have a small video clip of my dyno run if u want to see it.

Thanks for all the great help guys. I have a 92-GSR/B16 head (code is PR3-3). Glad to say great power and tq can be made on such lwo compression.

Ill update this when all goes together. If anyone else wants to add something feel free.

Yes it came off of a B17 motor, but the head itself is the same casting as the b16 I beleive.

Search for LSVtec, B20vtec, and get the new scc there is a decent write up in there.

So you used a ITR crank and GSR rods on the B20? And had 11:1 compression. 240WHP is amazing.

His motor was tested on an engine dyno, so that number is more like 200-210 whp. But still a very cool setup. If you are going to get a b20 block get a jdm b20b or a usdm b20z, they are the same thing but with different pistons, sporting 9.6:1 instead of 8.8:1.

I tuned my friends car on the dyno a while back , B20Z with just a cold air intake and DC 4-2-1 header and it dynoed 174hp / 140 tq . It has a completely stock B16 head , intake and t/b.

Yes I know the diff in compression, but B20Z's are much harder to find. And im an idiot for not noticing it was on an engine dyno lol. Keen eye.

is it safe for a b20 block to rev that high on stock internals? this is the setup im looking at:
gsr head
ctr cams
aem cam gears
double valvesprings
skunk2 intake manifold
hondata s200
b20block

BUT::: my question is how do i SAFELY crank her up to 8k-8.5k??? i was thinking about getting some forged high compression pistons, eagle knife edge crank and eagle rods! what would be the best build is what im asking, THANKS and hope you get my quesion

The error in the above posts is that not all JDM B20Bs are the 9.6cr.

Pre 99' B20B with the high rise mani, the standard was 8.8cr
99' and later was the 9.6cr, and there were some JDM B20s that had 9.2cr.

So, for the highest compression you want a JDM B20B (99'+) or USDM B20Z

jdmjeff - If you search around many posts have said you are fine as long as you upgrade your rod bolts with ARPs. Others will recommend getting a main girdle for extra measure. Also, there is no need to cut your crank. The only benefit this will have on a Honda engine is lowered rotating mass.

look into a stronger crank ive talked to some techs and they said to do so also i know a guy with a b20 and an ITR head making 220 hp at the wheels in a 91 teg also for more hp high compression pistons in a sleeved block you would be posting some pretty good numbers

i revved it to 8500 once in a while. i babied it though and it never blew, but i would only sleeve it if i went turbo. above 300 hp, for all motor maybe just a str block guard
