My I have a 95 Civic DX and my transmission shifts hard and I was wondering if there is a way to fix that so it could shift smoother. Thanks for the help!!!

 

new shifter bushings, new tranny fluid, new clutch

 

Try some new tranny oil first or at least check the oil level.

I've used Honda MTF with good results

 

Yeah I changed the tranny fluid and I forgot to mention that its an automatic sorry.

 

you could try the GM syncromesh. i think thats how you spell it.

I've noticed that Hondas have pretty harsh shifting automatic transmissions.

Even in accords, I can really feel the jolt when it shifts. Anyone else notice this?

"Hard shifting" is part of the Honda automatic design and it's actually a good thing. You should try earlier models, they shift even harder. I have people tell me that my auto tranny is about to go out. In reality I just had it rebuilt with a TCI master racing overhaul kit (and torque converter) and that makes it shift harder. The harder shifting actually leads to longer tranny life.

What you are experiencing as a hard shift is that your tranny slips less than other brand of cars trannys. Toyota for instance, puts a lot of retard on the ignition timing and also allows the tranny to slip more, so that you don't even feel the shift. More slip = more friction = more heat, and heat kills a tranny. More slip means less power is being transmitted to the wheels.

Honda automatics are some of the best there are. They are unique to ALL other car companies auto transaxles. They are actually designed a lot like a manual, without the obsolete clutch. They have excellent gearing. If the auto trans were 5 speeds instead of 4, they would actually be better and more economical than the manual trans. The fifth gen civic allows you control over all four gears. If you force the engine to rev all the way up, then shift, you will notice something that standard transmission diehards will never experience. During the shift, your car will surge forward HARD. This is a result of a huge torque boost being released during the shift. Compare this to how a manual trans feels during a shift. You feel dead in the water.

This leads me to the next great thing about autos. Because of this shifting characteristic I've just described, if you were to install an aftermarket turbo, you will notice that it wont blow off during shifting. It will actually maintain boost pressure. In fact, think of what a torque boost does to spool your turbo to start you off in the low RPM for the next gear you're going into. Even the most highly skilled drag racer is still a step short of being able to shift with such precision as an automatic transmission.

Now for some reason, automatic threatens the manhood of all car enthusiasts. Usually after a post such as the one I've made will follow pages of hateful responses. As if I walked into a marine barracks and shouted "gay pride". "Gay pride", haters!

 

Yeah I thought about getting the same overhaul kit that cost around $220 from Jegs.

 

Yeah I thought about that but I talked to a honda mechanic and they didnt recommend using additives in the tranny. So I didnt know about that. They said it could ruin the tranny. Just from what they said. Thanks Though!!!

Considering he's complaining about the transmission shifting hard, I also thought it was pretty obvious that he was discussing an automatic.

That aside, I don't think you can really tone down the shift firmness without, I dunno, draining half of the fluid out of the tranny . I don't recommend that.

Here's a solution: find a buddy with a GMC Syclone or Typhoon and ask for a WOT run through third or fourth gear. **** shifts so hard it gives you whiplash. Puts everything in perpective for ya .
