I was shocked and i explained to him that i see guys running 18 on the same car, he says that it takes major modification to put 17or 18 on!!! this guy must bestocked on 16's beacuse he said that even a 16 would need a really low -profile tires!

 

17" with 205/40/17 will fit fine...dude's on crack or something. It is a low profile tire but WTF else are you gonna put on there?

I didnt say they didnt slow me down, LOL... I agree, hit up some lightweight 16's or 15's

Kosei K1 racing are pretty light and def a hot wheel, if you can afford it... hit up some TE-37's (what is on my current teg)

if you are wondering what I mean about slow me down, do a google search for the term "moment of inertia" and you will know

 

when you say slows me down, i assume you mean the change in gearing? my car ran stock at 16.7 , please dont tell me wheels alone will make a big differnce

 

17's and 18's will fit on 92 and up civics, no rubbing unless it is hammered, they might rub when turning really hard, but all my show caaa friends have 18's on thier civics and they are fine.............................

 

slows down as in bigger wheels weigh more... added weight slows the car down...

i got some motegi mr7 white's on my car... 17"... 24.5lbs per wheel... heavy as hell... but im not looking for speed or performance... just want something nice looking... id say 17" is max to go for looks... anything larger than 17" just doesnt look or fit right

 

It also slows your car down b/c of the gearing with a big wheel + tire combo. When I put 17s on my car, with 205/40/17s, the entire wheel + tire combo was bigger and you can feel the difference.

 

moving mass has the biggest affect on acceleration. For example, take a pen and you can easy spin it between your fingers. Tape a cd on the end and spin it again, you feel the difference even though a cd is not much heavier. Once it gets going its harder to stop so your brakes will take a beating.

in a nutshell it is best described like this:

it take more force to move an object the farther it gets away from its axis of rotation, when you really get into it density applies too. the radius of a 17" wheel is 1" larger than that of a 15" wheel therefore putting the most dense part of the rotating assembly farther away from axis, making it harder to move. when I say density is a factor, a true mugen MF8 will spin faster than a rota circut 8 because there is actually less mass to the wheel, this is why you want lightweight wheels.

to demonstrate this theory your self (moment of inertia) do as we all did in earth science:

take a 1oz fishing weight and tie a string to it. spin it on this string 12" away from your hand, easy as hell, then spin it 72" from your hand (6 ft for the mathmatically challenged), it takes MUCH more force to spin it farther away. now take the same theory, think about it as literally pounds more metal spinning between 0 and 7000 rpm. get it? so the smaller and lighter the wheel, the faster you accelerate and decelerate. i personally like 16's because you get a little big rim look, and alot better performance than a 17. my volks weigh 11.2 lbs each.

to demonstrate further, if you take 3 wheel sizes, and all of them weigh exactly the same, the smallest will still spin faster than the largest due to the reduced distance from its center axis.

guy i had 19' racing harts on my 1996 civic and it rubbed just a little on turns 18' were like 13' stocks dind't even rub on bumps....

 

hell with it, get all ballsy 215/35/18 fits on 92-95, so no prob on 96+
i got a 97 with 215/45/17 on it with the wheel wells intact and eibach lowering springs, no rub!!

Overall diameter of 205/40/17 is the same as the overall diameter of 185/60/14.

It's the weight that makes the difference...as previously explained.

I just went from a 205/40 to a 195/50/15 which is an 1" smaller in overall diameter which does change the "ratio" a little bit. I can tell a difference between the lightweight 1" and the heavy *** 17". It's not like you car is going to be a lot slower after you put the 17's on, but it will be noticable.
