-eg with b16 swap

we did the swap a month ago, and yesterday when he turned on his some belt would squeek really loud for a split second. the next day it would last longer and would squeek alot louder. we dont know which belt it is, timing belt isnt rubbing the valve cover, ps and alt belt arent rubbing against anything?? any ideas??

 

serpentine belt

 

I have a similar prob. on start up only. Until I rev the engine it dcoesn't go away. Also at night with the headlights on it will make that noise. Alos what is the serpentine belt?

Not on a I4 those are usually on cars with 2 heads.

When a belt squeeks it usually means its to tight or to loose. Right loosinging it up.

 

i think it may be my alternator belt, hence the squeeking when an accesory is turned on. So how would I tighten that belt up. (sorry to jack your thread, I hope this info helps you too.)

damn, that sucks cuz on of the belts is tight and the other is kinda loose. how can u tell exactly which one it is?

 

Aight for both of you (99bb6 and allmotorEG-SI) the way that i test my belts is by pushing my finger down on the belt. I usually leave about a 1/4 of a inch cushion for the belt and it seems to work great. Just loosen it up and pull it to tighten the pully, put your thumb on it and push down, then pull to make the belt tighter and put tention to it and tighten and you should be good to go. Hope that helps.

Thats probably why it squeeks. If the belt is to tight it will squeek, if its to loose it will squeek.

If you know for a fact its really tight then thats why its squeeking.

It squeeks for a second right, like you press the throttle and its gone?

 

yea thats right, only on start-up and if revs fall below idle(such as extra accesorys coming on, i.e headlights)

 

You just need to loosen your belt a little.

 

sometimes my only squeeks on the start up and when i step on the gas it goes away. but now its been squeeking no matter what at 1-2000 rpm

 

Did you adjust the belts?

 

thats wierd that it would suddenly be tighter and need to be loosened. By the way, how do I adjust the belts. I'm assuming there is a belt tensioner that I will need a larger breaker bar to put on it and adjust it by loosening a bolt and tightening it at the right setting. This is just a guess though. Is it right?

 

my alternator belt is too tight... although it sounds nothing like a squeek... it sounds more like a high pitch whining sound... and it happens when i step on the gas... at idle you cant hear it at all... and i figure it makes the whining sound always when i step on the gas... its just that the engine gets loud enough to cover the sound after about 2k....

just havent gotten around to loosening it yet

 

sounds like the diodes are going bad inside your alt ,could also be the bearing though. some belts sqeak due to dryness, if you put a dab of rubber friendly lube on the ribbed side (sil-glyde) it will stop the sqeaks. thats assuming the belt is properly tight and in good condition.

 

Dude 1200 posts and you don't know how to adjust your alternator belt?
-Looking towards the front end of the car
-Under the intake manifold on the right side of the engine bay
-Your alternator is here, and it is held on by one bolt on the bottom, and a bolt on the top, that is the tensioner
-You must loosen both bolts (you may need a breaker bar... just for the sake of getting in there). The top is relatively easy to get to, the bottom you will have to get at under the car.
-Once both bolts are loosened, the alternator should move within the tensioner bracket.
-Get it to where you want it, and tighten the bolts back up.
-Have a

yeah i adjusted/loosened my belts today. still the same. when i turn it on it squeeks, and between 1-2000 rpm it will squeek.

how do i know if its the diodes in my alt are going bad?
how do i know if its the bearings?
what type of rubber freindly lude do you recomend? this is getting really annoying!

 

my does the same i got a 98 civic with a 00 b16 swap .i think its the power steering belt.i put it to thight ,haven't had a chance to adjusted.
