vtec question

Default vtec question

i have a motor out of a 88 or 89 crx... and my friend gave me a vtec head, without the vtec ecu..can i still drive the car without the vtec hooked up? i was also was told that if i bought a apex-i vtec controller i would be able to set up vtec without the ecu?? can anyone help???

i'm really not qualified to answer this, but i'll take a shot at it before it falls off the main page...

you can run a vtec head without vtec, but i'm not sure if you'll have to do any OBD conversions to get it working. the apex vafc taps into the vtec solenoid wire to change the vtec engagement point, so i don't think it'll work with a non-vtec ecu. however, you can rig up some kind of rpm switch. do a search on that one... i've never messed with it. however, before you do all that, you'll have to run some oil lines to the head to enage the vtec. it's called a mini-me... search, you'll find 1000s of hits.
