Default what are the benefits of obd1 conversion

i have been reading alot on people doing obd1 conversions and am thinking of buying a harness to do it. but i dont understand the benefits of the work and money. i know ecu's is prolly one reason and about the only reason i would do it so i can run hondata or AEM in the future, but what other if any benifits do you get out of it?

Another reason I did mine is so I could run my o2 sensors properly with a new Header.

Hmmm to say hey my B16A isn't jdm...it's a USDM Del Sol engine! look...it's OBD1.

I'm doing it as prepartion for my c5 and to run hondata. Also the p28 ecu has a wide variety of chips available.
There's about 5 programs each for the p30/p72. There's over 20 for the p28. The gray obd 1 plugs look better than the obd 0 plugs imo. Better technology.

Reasons? Here's some good ones:

1. Better tunability
2. For DOHC VTEC motors, you don't need to run that retarded twin oxygen sensor setup that requires hacking headers
3. You don't need to run unreliable distributers and/or ones that don't fit right. 1992+ distributers are MUCH more reliable
4. If you just bought a complete 1992+ motor, you don't need to scrounge and pay top dollar for inferior stuff to run the motor
5. And if you are running a Z6, GSR, ITR, later LS, etc., you can actually run the RIGHT ECU for the motor and not have to worry about expensive reprogramming or smog worries.

They both can be tuned
More people are going OBD-1 mainly because of the fact the most people are going OBD-1.
Ya dig???

the only reason im going obd1 is for hondata... seems like a waste of money for any other reason. its alot cheaper to get a couple bungs welded into a header for o2 sensors than to switch to obd1

I have to disagree here. Are you trying to tell me that a stock PM6 with RPM activated switch runs a Z6 just as well as a stock P28? Or than a 1G JDM PR3/PW0 runs a GSR/ITR just as well as a P72/P73? I seriously don't think so. Also keep in mind that this says nothing of the fact that you have to BUY one of these ECUs AND an older distributer (unless you are swapping a Z6 into a 1988-1991 SI - in which case you alrwady have the ECU and distributer). And even then, you will have to deal with such issues as spending even more big bucks trying to get the right fuel/ignition maps programmed, the distributer not fitting right on a Z6 head, having to deal with that stupid oxygen sensor setup on a GSR, and not being able to pass smog in California because you are not running the right ECU. The bottom line: using pre-1992 ECUs to run 1992+ motors is a halfass practice that just plain sucks! But then again, this is the case pretty much any time you take such shortcuts.

I agree with stormin matt. I have done a lot of OBD0 setups and went through a lot of chips and fuel controllers and different tunes and nothing beats the drivability of a obd1 ecu. the programs are more refined. it is the basic law of progression. if obd0 was that good honda would of never came up with OBD1. the older ecus just don't lend themselves well unless it becomes programmable like zdyne and even then that is a lot of money. also the newer dist are better.

I'm sorry, I just have to disagree with most of this thread in general. If you're willing to buy an eprom burner and do a bit of reading you can do about anything with a pm6/pr4/pm7 that you can do with obd1. We have one-wire vtec, boost, traction control, etc, and there's access to a commented disassembled rom with frequent revisions.

For the home tuner that wants to spend a little time learning, obd0 is just fine. I'm not doing the conversion myself because I can't find any reason to.

dataloggin, vtec control, this that and everything else is just easier w/ obd1. w/ obd-0 you have to use a ps9 (90-91 ex auto ecu) or add a ton of electroncis to a pm6 for vtec.

and not to knock Turboedit cuz it's a great program i've heard alot of stories of drivability with it. Not so much w/ uberdata though.
