Default New Owner with Dumb ?

Whats up forum Im a happy new owner of an 04 S2K(Gaaaye), my question is about braking in the motor, I picked it up with 87 miles, I have people telling me that I cant shift above 3k until it hits 500 miles and that I cant hit Vtec until i hit 5000 miles, then I have a buddy of mine who bought a new G35 who says thats crap, that that was true for older cars that these new cars dont have to be broken in, well what is the dealy, so far I really havent fully enjoyed my car, thanks for any input.

Thats true, not for 5000 miles but it's true, what i knoe is that you shouldnt drive in high rpm until the engine hits 3000 km which is around 1800 miles. It's very healty for the engine.

Keep it under 5k for 1,000 miles. Then go and drive the **** out of it to break in the vtec cams and then you can chill out again.

i am a firm believer in breaking things in quickly.... at 200 miles my evo saw full throttle to the redline.... at 500 miles it ran 13.4 at the drag strip......

at 13k miles I have zero problems...... no long term effects so far.

why do people make up their own numbers? the service manual specifically says not to exceed 5500 rpm during the first 600 miles.

Go Razor.
Everyone has the answer but its all about the factory blurb.
If anyoneone knows it's them.
Think about it, they want the least repairs under warranty. Why would they steer you wrong.
Just for the record though I went crazy after 500 miles. I have 4000 now and oil usage and all is normal. I got it in my head that it said 500 m not 600.

It's all opinion here, in terms of break-in procedures. You can do a search on google on break in procedures and you'll get endless websites that state the best procedure. The fact is, just drive the car normally, don't abuse it and perform routine maintenance on it. Check oil levels, make sure they are where they need to be. It doesn't get easier than that. You don't need to stress about this.

checking the oil level is the most important thing you can do with this car (especially during breakin). an engine with FRM cylinder walls takes longer to break-in than standard motors. also, do lots of engine compression braking, the extra pressure on the oil rings helps seat them quicker.

I got a question...
When does the VTEC kick in on this car. I know for my Civic it kicked in around 4500 I believe. I just want to make sure so I know when to tell the people riding with me lean their head forward before I shift so they don't get whiplash LOL.

5800-6200 rpm depending on engine load and temp.

technically the motor already has been broken in at the factory. it not like you just got a fresh rebuild and your piston rings have to break-in with the cross hatches on the cylinderwalls.
in my hatch i babied the piston rings when the motor was rebuilt till 1500 miles. then i got on it. it ate about a quart every two weeks.
on my next rebuild. off the shop's parking lot i drove the car reving up to 8-9k just to let the cross hatches break in and get a better seal, on first and second gear. then i babied it for 1000 miles. motor barely ate any oil till the next oil change. But then again there are so many variables as to why cars eat oil, and the proper break in is one of them.

but since you have a $30K plus car, ill just follow what the BOOK says.
you know what your s2000 has about 200,000 miles of life in it. just be patient and wait for the 600 miles the manual says ( the 04 manual states the break in for the 04 is 600 miles)
i got it on vtec when my baby hit about 500 miles on the odometer. i took it to an autoX event when it had 2000 miles. its amazing how a bone stock s2k with factory tires performs on par with STi's and EVO's with autoX dot tires.
