9k rpm downshift = ??? :o
Well I finally did the infamous high rpm downshift in my itr powered EF.....
The motor is basically stock from an 00 itr, with toda valve springs, portflow Ti retainers, and Power Enterprise Timing belt. It has put down 185whp and 130ft-lb with just bolt-ons and hondata s200 untuned.
I was on the highway last weekend at about 2am in a deserted area with my buddy who has a near stock S4 (diverter valves, chip?, etc) and another guy who has a bimmer 328 with some sort of swap.
They were going to do a hwy pull from 2nd gear roll on the on-ramp and I got behind them. After they took off, I floored it and came rolling up on them.
So next they merge and get next to each other to do a 50mph rolling start. I roll up along side and it's me on the left, then the bimmer, then the s4. I put it in 3rd and as soon as they take off, I just floor it again. I wind out 3rd and walk maybe 1 carlength on the bimmer and 1/2 car on the s4. I shift to 4th and my lead is slowly growing and they are both dropping back a bit more. I wind it out to 9000 rpm's in 4th and shift to 5th... WAAAAHWAAAHAWHWWAAAAA!
I push the clutch in quickly as I have obviously misshifted to 3rd.
I saw the tach run up to 10k+ in that 1/2 second or so!
Well I put it in 5th again and WAHAHAWAAAAAWAAAAA!
****! It went into 3rd again and blipped the tach up to 10k again!
So at this point I'm freaking out thinking I'm fucked. I've definitely overrevved the motor and it's my own ******* fault.
Let me just preface this by saying that I have NEVER mis shifted before. EVER. Period. In all the 4 years that I've had 2 itr's, and 3 civic's, + driving several other friend's cars with swaps, etc. And I've always wondered how people could possibly do a 3-2 mis-shift... it's sooo incredibly retarded and imho you'd have to be a jackass to mis-shift like that (at least that's what I've always thought). Well I have a b&m short shifter on the middle setting and the gates are somewhat close and notchy now. So maybe that's to blame. Maybe it's the 200,000mi shifter bushings in my pos EF, or maybe it's the hasport shift linkage for a cable tranny that I'm using with my itr hydro tranny... or maybe I'm just the world's biggest FUCKTARD. But ****** A... a 4-3 mis-shift?! Say it with me - F U C K T A R D.
I didn't run my buddies again and they didn't want to run again. So we all just caravan slowly home, and I stop at a gas station to fill up and check my idle. It's like stock. Damn, I guess I got lucky?!
Or maybe it's the valve springs and timing belt that prevented the bad stuff from happening.
I'll do a compression test and leakdown test just to be safe... If anything comes back negative, I guess I'll just have to get that headwork I've been putting off.....
moral: It can happen to you.

That's something I thought I'd never do as well. But last weekend I pulled the ole 4th to 2nd at 85mph. Lets just say I've already talked to some people about a new motor b/c there's not much you can do when you look down a spark plug hole and see your crank.
Happens to the best of us
Countless runs down the 1320 + lots of hard driving on the street for the last 6 years, and I do one 3-2 misshift and blow my motor
Needless to say I am a lot more sympathetic (now) when it happens to someone else.

yeah it sucked. I was in atlanta 200+miles from home
I was able to get it home safely however. Now I just need to put something back in that huge hole where my motor used to be. I guess I deserve it b/c I kinda laughed when I saw posts about other people mis-shifting, but now after experiencing it myself I have a totally different attitude about it. I've had 9 cars in four years and have never done anything like this before. Lets just say it has been a humbling experience so far, but the only thing to do is build it back better and faster. Only now I'll probably drive like a grandma til I get over this whole thing.

Once last year we forgot to put a rev limiter on my chip and I revved to VAFC 9999 (so who really knows) on stock ITR valve train....the motor never flintched...took that **** like a champ and ran strong until I sold it.
I've done the infamous 3-2 shift but I nailed that fizzle at the indicated redline which remarkably is quite accurate.....
I have't sat down to do the math as to what it woulda been, but in my mind it's probably close to 11krpm ...I blew the **** outta the tranny and my exhaust valves complained and returned to me a set of smashed valveseats and low compression.
180, 180, 180, 80.
It was not a happy month.....

LOL, I didn't think you read that post
Opie, who video'd himself downshifting at Expo into third and pinning the tach while Chris N is saying, "wow, wow, wow!"

i feel your pain...itdidthe SAME EXACT thing to my b16 exept i didnt have toda valesprings in my crx and let me tell you...it can happen to ANYONE....but im sure u know that already...good luck with yor motor!
It shouldn't happen if you use the proper shift techniques...third naturally falls into place...when you shift to fourth, you're supposed to flip your hand over and cup it...that way there's no way you can go into 2nd...
Quoting Michael Delaney from Team-Integra.net...
"it's all in the technique. if you hook the shiftknob on the right side with your hand, the tendency is to pull towards you as you pull back for the downshift and get 2nd instead of 4th.
if you cup the shiftknob on the left side of the **** and simultaneously push out (instead of pulling towards you) as you pull back for the downshift you'll be guaranteed to get 4th.
we do this in the racing dog gear Hewland gearboxes which require heel & toeing because they are synchroless.
you have to learn the basics of shifting for road racing because if you're fumbling to get into gears, you lose drive, start coasting, and the opposition will pass you or you'll lose lap time.
everyone should learn good shifting basics..."

BTW, I know you did your mis-shift going into 5th but I just wanted to share this information...
If you're shifting into 5th at redline, that means you're going 120 mph, I believe that is plenty to make your point...flooring our cars in our cars can be stressful on the engine...

samething happened to me couple weeks ago (I've been driving stick for 7 weeks now, not that it's an excuse)
Just cruising on the highway 5 gear around 4800 rpm. then there was little traffic, I brake a little to slow it down.. at 45mph I downshift to 4th to slow down more , but i slipped into 2nd. rpm went to 8300, just before the red line.. lucky me...

Don't feel bad, Ken. IMO, the 4-5 upshift is the hardest shift to do quickly. The only track I regularly use 5th gear is MAM. If I nail T14 at MAM (home of Expo 5), I end up using 5th gear. I'm absurdly slow making the shift because it's hard to push the shifter up and against the force of the centering spring with any kind of speed and accuracy.

If you're going to drive your car like that - a little preventative maintenance and good parts go a long way....
