Question about Remote Paging Alarms
I currently own an Audiovox APS-996 remote paging alarm. I had it installed at the local Audio Xcellence shop, but I was confused from what they told me. They placed the antenna under the dash somewhere, and said there was no way to extend it elsewhere.
What I wanted to know is, can I extend it and maybe run the wires into my back hatch, then mount the antenna there? I think it would extend the effective range of the remote. I noticed that it will work from far away, but doesn't work that well through walls. Advertised range is 1/3 of a mile, but part of me thinks things won't get any better. I hate being inside when my remote can't send a signal to my car, it's almost pointless having the pager...

depends on what the wire is... maybe.... but probably not, unless u can find a computer patch cord, or the cord is long enough... mine is on my visor.... it wouldn't reach my hatch either, so i put it there and stashed the wire under the interior panel that goes up the window pillar.

Hm... computer patch cord? I work in IT so I can probably get anything computer related. I never saw the unit, so I'm not sure what kind of wire is. I just didn't want to go ripping things apart if they were actually being truthful that it can't be extended. What kind of wire is it?

Well that is what I would assume, but I never checked what kind of connection came with that part of the alarm. Also signal strength along the length of the wire could be an issue as well, right? I was hoping to find some answers before I go ripping everything apart...
if it's a remote paging alarm, then your ant. should not be under your dash, it's lowering your range, and unlike your car lowered isn't better. I don't advise extending the wires, but they should reach the front windshield which is were you want it. I'm not sure the variances between audiovox and viper but with a viper ant. you can't bundle the wires up or the range is lessened, they need to be fully run, other wise it creates a "magnetic loop" or "magnetic field" as the viper tech's told me. your ant. will more than likely not reach the back hatch but will defintely reach the windshield the ones I've put in (audiovox) have
oh yeah and the ant. wire is only four wires, power, ground and two signal wires, part of why you don't want to extend it is the signal lose, it is a powered ant.

Moving the antenna i doubt will do anything. I have heard of a modulator for that unit that will allow you to use your cell phone. which means you can control the alarm or get paged it the alarm goes off with your phone from anywhere as long as you have service. I am unsure if its out yet or when it comes out, but you should look into it

That sounds like a really cool idea... thanks for all the input, I guess I'll just deal with it for now.

I got a paging alarm system and they put the antenna at the very top of the inside of my windshield. So im pretty sure you can extend yours
APS-996c?
Thats what i have on my beater and the kit comes with like 10 ft of antenna cord. Who the heck installed it?
cause they were lazy!

That's what I was going to say! I always stick them up behind the rear view mirror, there's enough cable to reach.
"Moving the antenna i doubt will do anything". It will do a *TON*. Remember, it's a weak signal (IIRC in the 434MHz range)... and being behind a metal firewall, between metal doors, and with all the metal under the dash, it WILL ruin the range. Mounted up high in an area where there's not much metal blocking the signal will greatly improve your range.

Hm... let me look at the box. It is just an APS-996, and I had it installed at my buddy's audio shop. They took three days though cuz they didn't know how to fit actuators behind my door panels (not too much space, you have to mount them upside down or something). Thanks for all the replies though, I'll take a look this weekend and see if I can make any changes.

I was told that it is possible, but no shop will do it because of legal liability. You start it in gear, it kills someone, etc... who knows.
But to do it, you just have to disable whatever relay senses the clutch being pressed in, and make sure you keep your car in neutral wherever you go. I didn't feel like risking this one, but it is possible.
