Default Houston we have a problem (TDC resetting issues)

Ok I turned the crank pulley until the cam gear was at tdc (up). After that, I loosend the crank pulley tensioner, go the belt off the cam gear, and turned the crank pulley to TDC (single line). Started up car to check the timing, let it warm up a bit, and fully advanced it gives me a reading below the TDC mark..... WTF. Anyone know whats up?

when you pulled on the tensioner to get the belt tight are you sure you did not turn the crank some?

Shouldn't have mattered at that point...... timing belt was on bolt the cam gear and crank pulley at that point and it was kind of snug..... so no slippage.

also what you are saying dont make sense<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by spyderracing32 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Ok I turned the crank pulley until the cam gear was at tdc (up). why did you take the belt off then put it back on then try to set the timing??

I used the belt to turn the cam gears to tdc, then took the belt off and set the crank.

aziz was right on this one...that doesnt make any sense...first off you should be turning the crankshaft until the line on it lines up with the arrow on the motor block...then you set the cam gears seperately until the up marks are up and the two horizontal lines are lined up with the line on the back of the inner timing cover...then put on the belt...starting from the crankshaft, waterpump pulley, cam gears and then the tensioner..and make sure you dont move any of the parts you have already set...then tighten the tensioner...check to make sure all of the allignment marks are still set and make sure there is no slack..make sure your distributor is set at 1 and you should be good to go after that

I have had problems with my car, and multiple other sohc's.. they never seems to line up perfectly. The solution is to advance/retard the belt one tooth on the cam gear until your timing can be adjusted properly. It will look as if it is a half tooth off, but if the dizzy is in the middle and the timing is good, then your cam is properly timed.

"You turned the crank pulley to get the cam gear to TDC" - At this point, the crank pulley should have been in the correct spot also. So when you say you "took the belt off then turned the crank pulley to the white line" - this maybe where you messed up.

Just redo it: It sounds like your dealing with a SOHC, so get the cam to TDC for #1, get the belt off, get the crank lined back up and reinstall the belt according to the Helms, following its rerouting and retensioning methods.

This is exactly how i reset my timing. It appears to me that the cam gear is first set to tdc then then crank pulley.
