As you know, I've taken it upon myself to make a How-To for installing Energy Suspension Shifter Bushings.

This is for the Transmission side of the install.

What we have here, is Part 2 of 2. This is the Shifter end of the install.

Step 1:



Of course, drive your vehicle upon some ramps. Makes it a lot easier.

Step 2:



Crawl under your vehicle. You'll see this right above the exhaust piping. Some people remove the piping, but you don't have to (unless you're removing the entire shifter linkage).

Step 3:



Unbolt the 2 bolts that are there. They are 12mm bolts. The other side is self tapping, so no nuts.

Yank the entire b00shing off with the backing plate that is also mounted with it. Might take a shove here and there due to the flared lip on the shaft you see there, but it'll come off.

Step 4:



Separate the backing plate from the stock b00shing. It might of already came off when trying to pry the b00shing out.

Step 5:



Use some trusty needle-nose pliers to shove the OEM sleeves out. The Energy Suspension package DOES NOT come with new sleeves. You must re-use the old ones. Here is 1 sleeve.

Step 6:



Here is the other sleeve. Pry it out aswell.

Step 7:



Lube the old sleeves with the supplied grease that comes in the package and slide the sleeve into the new Poly b00shing.

Step 8:



Done with both sleeves. Again, lube them both up.

Step 9:



Since the old backing plate will be re-used, I lubed the upper part of the b00shing where the backing plate will sit.

Step 10:



This was the hardest part of the install. You might not think the hole in the new Poly b00shing is big enough to slide on the shaft, but it is. You'll need to squeeze here and there and bend a little to place the b00shing above the flared lip on the shaft.

Use some of the supplied grease on the b00shing and the flared lip, it'll go in.

Step 11:



Finished. Mount the backing plate and rebolt with the 2 12mm bolts just snug. There you go.

After taking it for a spirited drive, definitely noticed an even bigger difference. Very crisp shifting.

Once I save enough for the Omni's, definitely getting the ES Master Suspension Kit.

 

^ Yeah I was thinking about getting some Omni's too. I need some better suspension before I head out to the track, and I will probably get the ES bushing kit too.

Oh and today I might but a custom exhaust, but I am debating on going with 2.25 or 2.5.

 

I have a suggestion for step 9 1/2 (something to do between 9 and 10). This might not work so tell me if it wont, but couldnt you put the new Poly bushing in hot(boiling) water to make it expand a little bit therefore making it easier to slide it over the lip on the shaft thing? But I could be wrong, Ive never delt with any Polyurethane bushings before. Good 2 part write-up though. Very nicely done.

Well if you boil it, it would expand, but I wouldn't trust that way. I don't know under what temperature Polyurethane breaks down. It could work or it might not. Try it and let us know!

Nico got his exhaust installed. We all met up on Saturday in Harlingen. Nico, Ramon, and 3 other hatches. Lots of competition. Nothing but B16s and B18s.

Dammit ...Too bad I went to ShowOff....

 

You can remove the entire shift linkage without removing your exhaust...at least that's what I did when I put my "b00shings" in . Made it easier in my opinion.

I was reading the instructions I got today with my B&M Short Shifter (yes, tomorrow a new write-up for a B&M install ) and it said to unhook the midpipe from the hangers and move it out of the way. So, I can just remove the hangers and be able to remove the shifter linkage all at once to make it easier for me to install the shifter?

I hardly make much as it is. $5.60 an hour at Sears...yes, I'm a slave. Pay all my bills and save whatever I have left to buy some stuff here and there for my car. Of course, while saving some for emergencies. Can't wait to go back to NYC as an Electrician and make 20+ an hour.

I had the shifter bushings for 2 months and this thread inspired me to install them, ive been to lazy. Just got done and its a nice feel

 

I installed these bushings and it feels like a better shift. But while I was under the car I noticed a bushing between the shifter and linkage that didn't come with the kit.

Can I order a new one of these and what would it be called?

Great write up and pics. Got the parts from Summit (along with a hat and a catalog!) and did this install a couple of days ago. Took me about a half hour to do both ends. Shifter does feel better. Well worth $20.

Don't remember seeing another bushing, though. Keep in mind, these bushings are for the shift stabilizer, not the shift linkage itself. I've seen aluminum bushings for the shift linkage, but am gonna wait on a short shifter kit.

i installed part 1

i cannot get these two bolts out to get the bushing out,
how can i get them out? they are rusty and rounded off,

Can i get new bolts at Home depot once they are out?

That's because this thread is almost 10 years old.



If you can't figure out how to swap shift linkage bushings you probable shouldn't mess with them.

 

Almost 10? Try over 10. I know, every new year makes it harder to adjust. I wonder how many rent checks bounce on the first of the year, because people write the last year instead...

 

I build jeeps.. Never worked on a Honda besides basic maintenance on my wife's odyssey. I'm not concerned with this fix, just wondered if pics were available somewhere for reference. Here's what I'm comfortable building, working on. Never been one for street machines. But need a good little daily.

 

I was refferring to the bump before xjex in 2006.

Xjex- its like three bolts after you get the car jacked up on stands. Two 10mm in the rear of the linkage and one where it connects to the transmission.
