Default Aftermarket power sunroof. Found a GREAT price. Anybody installed one of these?

So I was planning on molding an Si roof into mine and using an OEM sunroof after I found out most shops are charing $1K++ to put a power operated aftermarket in.

I've been looking and looking and looking and I finally found a vendor that sells straight from the source. Most places won't do it unless they install.

Well, these things are only $300! Power operated, high performance tinted glass, lifetime warranty, shade card...basically the works. I could even wire it into a stock Si switch.

Has anybody ever installed one? I know they have a reputation to leak but I figure if I reinforce the roof and use a good sealant I could probably. I've also seen them up close and they have pretty good looking seals. I'm also fairly sure I could do a better install job than the shops charging $700+ for labor. They just drop in!!

At any rate, does anybody have any experience installing a sunroof? Even a manual pop up one? How did it go?

LOL, the manual pop up one is the one I'm looking into for the civic.....haven't really been looking though. Has anyone done this yet?

Well all you do is cut a hole and drop it in.

It really can't be too terribly hard.

If you seal it up good I don't see why'd they be so prone to leaking.

I can understand that part, but doesn't cutting a hole in the roof (in non-oem sunroof/moonroof equipped cars) reduce the car's structural integrity?

Yes, but if you've looked at an OEM Acura/Honda sunroof assembly there's really not much reinforcement at all except for the sunroof 'cage'.

It wouldn't be hard to weld up a few small support braces.

It's not like you'll be cutting an empty hole. The sunroof assembly has a stiff metal frame that when screwed and expoxied in place I can't see it losing much rigidity at all.

I'm going to go ahead and go for it. I guess I'll just update this thread when it's all said and done.

have you thought about re skinning your roof with the roof from an si (from the junkyard or something). its really not that hard, and then it would be "factory" perfect. i've seen it done, just the other way around (eliminate sunroof and put dx roof on). you could probably pick in up cheap from the junkyard, and by saving money, you could sink a couple hundred into re-painting the roof, and then you'd have a nice factory installed sunroof AND new paint on your roof. this would be the way i'd do it if i was doing it to my own car. just my opinion.

Yes, I've thought long and hard about that. That's actually been my plan for a few months now.

Problem is, I have a sedan.

So not only would I have to buy a COMPLETE Si roof and sunroof assembly, but I'd have to appropriately get it molded/attached to the sedan roof and have it be seamless and smooth. Basically a TON of labor with an end result that is not 100% guaranteed

for pop up roofs... dont ruin ur car

and as far as installing a power one, ur better off finding a rare ex sedan with power roof. . and swapping all ur goodies into it.

EX never had an OEM kit.

As far as I know any that came from the dealer with them were aftermarket that used the OEM switch and what not.

I too thought they came with sunroofs but they didn't in America.

I've thought about getting a JDM/EDM roof clip shipped but I've yet to find an importer who will locate one for me.
