Planning for a rebuild? I am. Looking for a collection of information on the above topic. Mainly SOHC but any and all information helps.

Well I don't know much but I'm building my d series as well
So far I have a d16z6 block sleeved and bored to 1.8l and a ferrea valvetrain but I'm still in the buying part process. but feel free to ask any questions and I'll share any knowledge I have.

This is a good link, but I got a little lost so maybe someone could help clear it up.
1) How exactly does the plastic gauge work to measure clearances?
2) If the colors are stamped into the block & crank to desginate bearing color, why is it necessary to measure?
Sorry if this is a little noobish

1) When the caps are torqued down the plasti-gauge is crushed. You reomve the cap and measure the width of the plasti-gauge and you will have your clearance.
2) For peace of mind
Ensuring your engines livelyhood is always better than guessing.

Cool, thanks for the reply. When doing just a slight build-up, say for instance pistons and rods...is it necessary to replace the rod bearings???

The clearances must be checked to ensure they are within limits. If they check out OK then don't replace them.

Where can you purchase this so called "plastic gage"?
