Default Engine life and spec b.

If my car were a daily driver and saw occasional auto-x how long would my engine last with spec Bs? Would it last over 100k, 150k?

pointless question imho. it totally depends on maintenance and the driver.

It all depends on how cafeful you maintain your car. Make sure you do all recommended scheduled maintence especially with bolts-on. By some guages also to monitor the performance and running condition.

well what I want to know is how much shorter engine life would be with spec b's as opposed to stock. Bearing in mind driving style and maintenance were done properly.

Suppose there were two identical cars with two identical drivers. they both drove the same way and maintained it the same way. Would the car with spec b last longer or would the car with stock itr cams last longer? thats all im asking.

There are so many other variables that affect longevity of a car that I can't answer that question.

Sorry this reply does not pertain to your question. I just was wondering where you autocross your car? I also live in the bay area, san jose to be exact.

wringing more perf outta your car will almost certainly decrease the longevity/reliability of you car, ceteribus paribus.

Ok, here's my educated guess...

let's assume you do Toda B's, Toda cam gears, Toda valve springs and that's it.

Not taking into consideration the other mods usually "needed" to make these work..

I'd say by 100k miles, the stock ITR would be about ready to get it's 1st timing belt service (under normal service conditions)
The Spec B car would probably be on it's 3rd timing belt by then, possibly its fourth tensioner.
The stock ITR would be ok as far as valve springs..
I think no matter WHAT stiff *** springs are used, 100k and they are probably toast. ****, the OEM ITR ones won't be as good as they were off the showroom floor.. but Honda designed them to work for a LONG time.

Aside from that, and you probably spent over $100.00 in valve cover gaskets and Hondabond over the past 100k miles due to the B's more frequent valve adjustments... I think you'll be fine.

Really, it's your call.

But anyone who is SERIOUS about modifying cars knows that longevity will be affected.

to a certain extent, yes.. but not as extreme as the spec B.
reason being the spec B cams have huge primary lobes.. this constant tension on the valvetrain is directed toward the valve springs, tensioner and timing belt.

because the jun3 cams have "normal" sized primary lobes, the pressure of the huge VTEC lobe is transferred to the lost motion assemblies..
with the Spec B's.. it's as if the motor is in VTEC 100% of the time.
think about it... a motor in VTEC its entire life will not last 150k miles without strenuous maintenance.

this is what I think.. i may be wrong..

mike k.....good educated answers to his questions! i never thought of timing belt life when putting in cams....didn't think it would add that much tension to the belt....

anyways....
i did recieve that "94 plus Rear Tranny Bracket" today....thanks!! i'll be back for more!

the bigger the cam...harder head parts work...shorter life assumed. Also its easier for you to hit valves if you mis-shift.

End of lecture hall. Time to go to McDonald's.
