Default Skipping gears

I'm not trying to make this into a debate about whether skipping gears is bad or OK for your transmission, but rather to make sure that I'm not beginning to see the signs of a problem that could lead to a tranny rebuild. So anyways, I am wondering if what I am experiencing while skipping gears is normal.

For example, if I try to skip gears while downshifting (going from 5th at maybe 40 to 2nd, or 5th to 3rd on at highway speeds), I don't really grind, but I can feel the transmission working really hard to put the revs up to where they should be. I don't hear a grind, but it just doesn't feel right at all. I did this once or twice, then just started double clutching on any shift where I am skipping gears and then the problem is non-existent of course. But here's the weird part, I thought that it might be my synchros wearing out, but when I go from 3rd to 2nd at the same speed, it goes in like butter. Is it just my imagination, or does skipping gears in an H22 tranny cause the shifter to feel like it just doesn't want to go into gear?

I'm wondering because I really don't feel like having to rebuild a transmission anytime soon. I've never had any grinding on an upshift except for 2-3 times that I just messed up (nobody's perfect). So is my transmission OK? Is this something normal to experience on a Honda when you try and go from 5th gear to 2nd?

i think it's the method you're using to downshift. from my experience the tranny doesn't like 5th down to 3rd or lower. (i don't know why you're shifting from 5th to 2nd anyway).

if i were to:

push clutch in
put shifter from 5th directly to 3rd + match rev
let out clutch

this method makes the trany seem to fight me; like i'm doing something wrong.

now if i were to:

push clutch in
put shifter into 4th, then into 3rd by one quick motion + match rev
let out clutch

this goes in like butter. maybe both our trannies are messed up or we both can't drive but i think it's just maybe the design of it.

if you're a quick downshifter, i'd bet you can downshift to 4th and then downshift to 3rd in 2 major steps and be faster than doing it in one step. i can usually downshift in 2 steps from 5th to 3rd in about 1-2 seconds. i think that's plenty fast enough for the highway or backroads. the only problem with that is you have to push the clutch in twice as many times.

I'm just trying to make sure that I'm not going to have problems with this tranny anytime soon. I'm going to be revving a bit higher than the stock redline in this thing sometimes due to have internal mods that will allow me to do so.

I'm just making sure that when I take it up to 8500 rpm and shift to second that I'm not going to get a huge grinding noise. I don't skip gears that often and like I said, I've never actually put it into gear from 5th to second without double clutching it. I tried not doing that once and well, it didn't feel like going in apparently. I just wanted to make sure that this was normal. But then again, the more I think about it, it kind of makes sense due to the fact that if you go 2nd to 5th...you're going to get the same feeling.

Then be careful down shifting and rev match.

why shift that high, j00 have an h-series right

I would never down shift like that anyway unless I was coming off the
highway and happened to leave it in fifth till I was going 20 or something.

Good points. I am assuming that with my current setup that I am going to be making power above 8000. If I'm not, I'm not going to rev that high often, if at all. We'll see what happens on the dyno I guess.

But the hesitation on the gear going in when skipping gears on a downshift is normal? My second gear synchro isn't dying? I baby the car when driving around town so I hope it's not going out.

My guess is that when you skip from 5th to third without going into 4th first it doesnt allow the syncros to line up properly.

I guess that all I can do at this point is sit around and wait. I just hope that I'm not going to be grinding on the 1-2 shift when I get tuned. It never happened before and this was a problem when I first got the swap, so I'm not too concerned.
