Flashing CEL, P219A
Hi all,
First time post in the forum. I have a 2014 Honda EX-L Accord that has around 100k mileage. Recently, when I start the car, when I press on the accelerator the car sputters and shakes during the first 5 minutes. I’ve encountered a situation where upon accelerating (up to 40-60mph), the car sputters for a few seconds and then the check engine light starts flashing. When I turn the car off and restart it, the engine light disappears and drives normally. The car runs normally otherwise after it warms up (e.g. the temperature reaches halfway on the gauge).
I haven’t noticed any particularly combinations of events that lead to sputtering, but it happens even at low speeds. I’ve taken the car into the mechanic and there are no error codes logged into the computer despite the flash engine sign being on. The spark plugs were intact and the mechanic switched the cylinders around (which has alleviated the problem for a few weeks, but has since returned). I've since then also replaced the spark plugs (since it had 100k) and changed the throttle (perhaps an unnecessary change) but that has not alleviated the issue.
I bought a OBD2 scanner and hooked it up to the car. While it's driving, a P219A error code pops up. Any ideas what might be happening? If there are any insights or people facing similar issues, let me know and I’d love to hear about it.
Thanks!

- Fuel injector failure
- Engine compression abnormal
- Valve clearance incorrect
I had the exact same issue happened to me on my 2014 Honda Accord Sports. P219A as (current and history). I always had P219A code as current, on my ECM, even i plug out overnight and plug back in, the code came back instantly.
After months of diagnosing myself, i saw 2 faults IN MY CASE; First is exhaust leak between up and down stream sensor. Second is visible oil leak over area of VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve.
I have done the following as a DIY job -
1) checked/cleaned - MAF, MAP, upstream and downstream O2 sensor.
2) checked the clearance of intake and exhaust valves and corrected it,
3) replaced the leaky valve cover gasket.
4) cleaned the Intake valves carbon build up by soaking overnight and cleaning with the brush.
5) pulled all 4 injectors, clean them by ultra sonic bath, soaking overnight in Carb cleaner, and spray tested before putting them in.
6) checked/cleaned VTEC system - VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve and Rocker Arm Oil Control Valve.
7) checked/replaced spark plug, spark coils.
8) checked Purge Valve.
9) Removed CAT inspected and plug back in.
and many more that i don't even remember.
IN MY CASE - after replacing o rings on VTEC system (step no. 6), the Code did not came back as current or as a history. I am suspecting that the o rings for the components may be got hard and engine oil passing through passively. Although the First issue still remains of Exhaust leak and i am getting P420 for that.
