Is there any Play in my H22 cam gears?
Recently purchased a car and while going through the engine to check it out I loosened the cam bolts. After removing the timing belt and checking a few things I happen to notice the cam gears have a little slop on the Keyway. Is this normal?

I have two sets of b series vms gears and neither have any play. Never had any issues with them, that's more then I can say for skunk2 cam gears that crack or the aem 3 bolt ones that like to strip out.

Isn't it interesting how different experiences with the same brand product can be so vastly different. I have helped two guys with major engine function issues, one B18B and one B16A, and both had VMS cam gears. The problem was the same for both: The cam key slot was improperly cut with respect to the TDC marks at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. In essence, when you had the engine in what appears to be mechanical time, the camshafts were actually advanced in one case and retarded in the other. Switching to stock cam gears immediately fixed the engines.

I've seen that before with other cam gears just not my vms ones. It's always a good idea to compare the aftermarket cam gears vs stock because I've seen quite a few sets that had the 3/9 position markings off by one tooth.
