** Justin's EK Hatch Project thread: engine build, turbo D, bay shave, pics/howtos, and more **
Well, I have recently started my second Honda project, this time with my red 1996 Civic hatchback. Some might remember my Turbo Integra GSR I built a while back in 2002, largely from the help of honda-tech.com! (pics below)
I've got a new car now that I purchased almost a couple years ago now, from my buddy Erik, you know him as "monicle" on the forums here.
While I was debating what I wanted to do with the car, I added some simple things like Integra seats, window tint, and a center console..nothing special.
Project Goals:
I eventually decided that I wanted this car to be, most importantly, a lot faster then my Integra and my old Evolution 8... and secondly, do some things with it that I have not done before. So, with some mild change in plans (I did have a b18c originally, but scrapped it due to funds) I have begun building up a built D series motor for the turbo part of the project. Somewhere between swapping the motors Erik and I will be doing an engine bay tuck, I'm not sure how extreme I will go but it should be good. I've also got Erik's old 2000 Civic front end from his car now that he has put the Domani front end on his car. So, that will get painted and go on at some point as well. I'm sure I'll include some other mini projects as well, I still need suspension for one, and some other cosmetic upgrades, we'll see.

I am documenting my whole project as well on my site here:

News for Erik and I's car stuff or hobbies in general, my old Integra turbo install, parts list, and web log, etc:

All Erik and I's past and current project pics are on our repo here as well:

Enough talk, and on to the pictures and current project status!
My old 'Teg, miss this car so much
Justin's stuff / 2001 Acura Integra GSR (jackmoves.com)
ON TO THE NEW!
Justin's stuff / 1996 Civic Hatchback (jackmoves.com)
Used y8 cylinder head, currently at machinist getting valve job and rebuild:
d16y8 block, also at the machinist getting a bore/hone and fitted for 75.5mm YCP pistons with .0035 PTW clearance!
Justin's stuff / 1996 Civic Hatchback / Engine build & turbo / Engine refresh and build (jackmoves.com)
Picked up a y8 transmission too, and an OBX LSD:
And so it has begun...I'll be updating the thread as I get new parts or new stuff gets done. You can also subscribe to our sites RSS if you want as well!
Thanks!
Justin

Money, basically...and to a smaller extent I have never messed with D series and wanted to do something a little bit different. The tranny I got with my GSR was an LS tranny, 2nd/3rd gears were gone, it was going to cost $500-$600 to replace the gears or a little less to buy another tranny. I pieced together a D series motor and built bottom end for about that much.

Turbo, manifold, 3" downpipe courtesy of zex_cool from h-t Also, picked up a Greddy type rs from fellow forum member.
I'm hoping my dang block and head will be done this week, have not heard from machine shop since last Friday when they were starting the bore/hone.
Also, still debating on what rods to go with. Wait 2+ more months for fjt custom I-beams or go with Eagles/Scats or something standard length?? I'm almost to the point of being able to put the motor together and not sure if I want to wait 2+ more months hehehe

As always, all the build pics can be found here:

I like this build. You building an underdog setup. its all about the big b turbo these days. But I bet you could still do alot with a d and for cheaper.
