The Official Formula 1 2018 Season Thread
so the merc isn't a radical departure from '17. the team did say it will run more rake this year, however it did not look any different during the camera day so keep an eye on how much daylight we see under the rear of the car during testing. they might start jacking it up and change diffuser bits to keep the vacuum under the car
i like all the little winglets on top of the sidepods trying to throw the front tyre's dirty air outboard so it doesn't affect the rear wing
edit - ferrari / merc's solution to this is a lot more efficient (fewer elements) so i expect to see the aero bits moving and changing shape over testing

not bad not bad
i'm not sure about that split engine intake. all i see is more boundary layer
simplifies design and materials required for impact test but still...

I thought the McLaren Petrobras deal was for 2019. Didn't they get new fuel and lube sponsors last year? (too lazy to bing it)
EDIT: They had a new for 2017 deal for Castrol/BP after Esso and Mobil went to Red Bull.

All they can afford?
It seems to me the better looking halos (if there can be such a thing) are the ones that are incorporated into the livery ie body color, as opposed to those that look stuck on. I realize that's kind of a no brainer but on the track the Sauber doesn't look too hideous with it.

You can be pretty certain the gains you got last year will be inherited by the car this year. If you're pretty sure the wheelbase is an asset, then carrying it over is an absolute no-brainer.
The rake of the car is just a thing you work on all the time. We try to make the mechanical grip part of our suspension work nicely with the aerodynamic package that the aero guys work on, and where we have the broad peak of our best rear downforce performance is a little lower in ride height than some other cars. But we're not so bad!
The peak rear downforce moves up a little bit for this year's car, but we certainly won't be in the sort of rake territory that we saw the Red Bulls and co in last year.

I didn't bother to delve into her stats. It seems most of the "development drivers" never get a chance in an F1 car.

Alright, which one of you is Abiteboul?
“To be extremely clear, the car that we showed in digital was really a presentation for the livery,” Abiteboul told Motorsport.com during a Renault event in Paris.
“I have seen on forums people trying to extrapolate things from it. Well, calm down guys – don’t try to calculate the wheelbase because it will not be representative of anything!
