Re: The Official Formula 1 2018 Season Thread
I didn't notice this in the previous races but for Spain when they showed the starting lineup the grid was all wrong with P1 on the left side, but behind P2 on the right side and all the way down the rest of the grid.

Damn Gro is really just crashing out every race!
Not doing a good job as the "leader" of the team.
What ever happened to Kimi's car?
It's really amazing that nowdays F1 cars front wing is so complex but when a big chunk of it is broken and torn the car can still manage respectable laptimes and even end up on the podium.

What is this crap?
Re: The Official Formula 1 2018 Season Thread
for VER when they showed it up close in the post-race interviews it became clear it was just the end fence, all the main wing elements were intact.
RAI had suspected engine problem. no word yet on if this will require an early replacement. this was a new engine that got swapped in after a failure during practice.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2018 Season Thread
It went well. We finished 4th in class and 17th overall - out of 130+. Car was fairly quick, but it's no turtle. It could be quicker but the car owner insists on having all the drivers shift 1000 RPM under redline to preserve the motor, where as we rev the **** out of the turtle and the AWD allows us to drive as hamfisted as possible... which might explain why we tend to break random **** every race while they just change oil and brakes between events. That said my fastest lap in the Mosstang was only 8 tenths off my best in the Turtle.
I made a good impression and have a new team to drive with when I wish, so mission accomplished. We might do another race in September together.

Whispers doing the rounds in the Barcelona paddock suggest that Eric Boullier’s could be the next head to roll, as McLaren’s reality is they will not be battling for podium positions this season but instead will be fighting for scraps.
The Woking outfit have improved results compared to last season, which can be attributed to their switch to Renault engines this year but battling for minor points was not why they ditched Honda for the French manufacturer.
McLaren management’s ambitious pre-season target of matching Red Bull this year has proven to be way off the mark, as they are about half a second and a full second per lap down on the Blues, and probably a spot below Renault in the pecking order.
With technical chief Tim Goss shown the door last month, some are now predicting a demotion or ousting of Boullier from his position as racing director as the team reshuffles under more direct control of Zak Brown.
After the race in Spain, Boullier was asked by reporters if he could lead McLaren out of the rut and back to the sharp end of the grid, to which he replied, “Yes, I believe it.”
“In the past I have managed, revitalised and restructured several teams and I have also won with all of them in all categories. I know my job and we have to make sure that we can do it.”
As for the current team he heads, Boullier said, “I believe in the people we have, I believe in the managers, you always want strong leadership, good combination, be as flexible as possible, they look like generic words, but we do have to address our issues if we think we have left some.”
“We know what we have to do, we have to improve in reliability and performance, now there are other teams with the same engine, so we have references, it’s a long road.”
“This has been another step, a good job has been done to recover the reliability from the tests,” added Boullier who has only once celebrated a podium with McLaren at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix where Kevin Magnussen finished third.

looks like BOT actually did a good job pressuring VET before the VSC, and VETs tyres were indeed falling off. then BOT managed to 1 stop after following VET for a bunch of laps. that's pretty impressive. they did say BOT's tyres were down to the canvas. i wonder they would have put BOT on a 2-stop if he got out ahead of VET and could turn the wick up? either way i think it would have been a Merc 1-2
Mclaren had a bit more pace than Renault after the VSC in clean air. on fresh tyres. on a good day. with a tailwind.

I didn't realize EB was on the hot seat...he doesn't appear to be doing that bad of a job, at least on the outside. One article pointed out that McLaren had only achieved one podium (technically two after RICs DQ in AUS 2014) since EB has arrived.

TL;DW: Mercedes had to remove a device from their engine right before the season started which explains their lack of pace for the first 4 races. They have since found a way to claw back that performance.
Ferrari had an illegal battery that could deploy more energy than regulations allow. FIA found out about it after Baku & banned it but did not penalized Ferrari in exchange for their support of the 2019 aero regulation changes.
Eric Boullier is under a lot of pressure @ Mclaren, given a deadline and could get fired if results don't improve. Martin Whitmarsh could come back to replace him?

Of course Mercedes have been oil burning. Renault and Honda are both said to be hovering around 0.1l/100km while both Mercedes and Ferrari are much closer to the limit of 0.6l/100km (courtesy of AMuS). The logical conclusion is that both Mercedes and Ferrari are using more oil than Renault and Honda. On top of that, there's speculation that Ferrari could be burning even more oil [than the allowed 0.6l/100km] because of a separate oil circuit linked to the turbo, which per the regulation isn't a 'motor'. If Ferrari is doing that or if that is simply a competing team poking around in the dark making accusations based on what they think could be a loophole in the written regs, is hard to say...

If EB is just now on the hot seat, did the McLaren brass believe all that crap about having the 2nd best chassis on the grid?
The Ferraris were looking like mosquito foggers on startup a few races ago. Wouldn't be surprised to hear they burned more oil than regulations allowed.
