B16A Si-R II (170HP) What is this Noise?
Hi,
I am new to Honda's. I have been reading and watching vids but cant see an exact noise yet.
I recently bought a 1998 (EK) HB Civic with a 1995 del Sol Si-R Swap. it has spring retainers. It runs great, no smoking, feels strong. Took it to the dyno and dynoed 159whp (dynoyet) with just header and intake and mild CHIP tuned at 12.6 AFR (Rich) for road racing safety.
It didnt make the noise when i drove and tested it.. I changed the oil to fresh pennzoil 10w-40 and the ticking started. Then i Changed it again to Valvoline VR1 Synthetic 20w-50 and the ticking increased. I havent even drove 100 miles on her yet! I am going to put Valvoline Synthetic 10w-30 to see if it helps.
Can this be caused due to thick oil? Or there's a physical problem like bad LMA's or loose valve springs or retainers? it seems to be getting louder each day.
(VIDEO)
Attached you will find a link to Youtube so you can hear the noise and please advice what or where should i check.

50 weight oil?!?!?!? I can't even. I just can't. Use the correct oil.
It sounds like valve chatter. Check the LMAs (they're very easy to check) and double check all the retaining nuts on the rockers.
I cleaned my cylinder style LMAs although replacing them with the spring style is inexpensive.

OMG that hurt my soul every time you revved it.
Yes for the love of God please run 5W30 or at heaviest, 10W30 in super hot climates.
The clearances in the head are so tight that thick-*** oil doesn't lubricate everything properly. If the noise doesn't go away after a proper weight oil is used, then I'd try a valve lash adjustment, and if you still get the noise then your LMAs might have **** the bed.

Not trying to be an *** but why go with a different oil type than what is recommended? It's amazing how people want to out-engineer the Honda engineers whose jobs were on the line when designing and spec'ing these cars/engines. Follow the owners manual.

Heard the stupid rumor that using thicker oil will quiet the ticking noise, LOL. Old *** engine, yeah **** gonna need to be replace. You want to buy "new to me" used lma's that someone claims to be in good condition, go right ahead.
UPDATE:
Problem was happening before 20w-50 with fresh 10w-40. I live in 100F climate i doubt that caused all that noise. Anyways changed it back to 10w30 problem still persists. The car hasnt been driven even 15 miles with each oil.
I guess next step is open that valve cover and inspect

LMAs all day if they still haven't been changed by now. I didn't think there were many unfixed B16s left. Honda changed the LMA design from a plunger to a spring. This and a valve lash adjustment are step 1.
Also, 12.5 is too rich, you aren't turbo. 13.5 is rich for natural aspiration.
