I see a 60 series Land Cruiser keeping the hatches company. Perhaps it is a diesel?

It is definitely a diesel, manual. There's about a half dozen there.

 

OK so I moved half-way across the country in August. About 2000km. Car performed well aside from an oil drip from somewhere. Either oil pan gasket or rear main seal. Changed the timing belt the night before I left ... yeah, I never did it when I bought the car, mainly due to lack of skill at the time. Now I realize: A. It is painfully easy. In fact, it is really difficult to **** up. This was now my third timing belt change I've done and thankfully with the right tools it gets breezier every time. B. This was clearly the first belt change the car had in 23 years. Yikes. Belt was barely hanging on.

Clutch is having minor trouble engaging ... well what I am seeing is high revs right after I shift, and then it settles down quickly. I assume this is the clutch plates not engaging right away. Maybe they're covered in oil from a rear main seal leak.

Left heated mirror wasn't functioning. Turned out it was the heater pad behind the mirror giving me problems. The connector to the printed heater element became detached. Wound up installing a brand new glass and heater element. Used my own instructions from back in 2009 ... they're still accurate!

Discovered one of the one-way valves on my headlight washers gave up the ghost. This is actually a common problem. Knowing this, I've gathered numerous one-way valves from donor Toyotas (exact same Koito part) at the junkyards. Tested them all (I had 4), all had the same problem: Basically the rubber condom that seals the valve gives out. Rubber breaks down over time, no way around it. There is no way to fix it. Well, whatever. Ordered some generic ones from China, same difference.

 

Rear main seal will just let oil leak on the back of the flywheel and get thrown outwards. Transmission input shaft seal is the one that will allow the clutch to become contaminated. I'd lean more towards a clutch that's just plain worn out though.

 

Small mod, but one I've had my eye on for a *really* long time. Finally sourced an original LHD power window out of Europe that has Auto-UP!!!!! It was a grey switch, but I swapped the internals over to my existing black switch and all was good in the world.

For those of you who don't know what this is, it's a LHD switch with both Auto-DOWN AND Auto-UP! This is significant because while all RHD switches had this feature, it existed only on certain "Scandinavian-market" Civics in LHD form. I once ordered a switch from Sweden in the hopes it would be correct but it turned out to be just a standard one without. While it's possible to mod an LHD one with RHD parts, I wasn't keen on doing this and it turns out now I don't have to. Nice score, Deschlong. It's the little tweaks that make me smile, sometimes (like the intermittent wiper mod, or the lights-on chime mod you wrote up -- actually not so little if you prefer a working battery). Glad to see you're still making upgrades to this car. Any updates on your AWD Civic project?

They're all manuals, but I dunno about which specific gearbox they have.

So with this auto up master switch, is there any other modding that needs to be done or is it just a plug in play type deal?

Shoot! That confirms my suspicions then. I was able to locate a auto up switch but none of the auto features work Guess ill have to keep looking.

 

Could be something wrong with the switch. Does it do the extra click in both directions?

Yeah im pretty sure the switch is messed up somehow. It does have the extra click in both directions. Ive taken is apart as far as i can to check the solders to be sure none of them were broken, and as far as i can tell they look good. I'm guessing something else in the circuitry is bad.
