Hi all.
I have a 91 civic manual 4 speed std. I swapped a rebuild 5 speed tranny one year ago. I used 10w30 walmart motor oil. I have no complaints. But recently I got a new girlfriend and am thinking of being a responsible and decent guy. So I'm thinking of drain the cheapo motor oil and pour in some manual tranny fluid. I want the right fluid for the right job. I'm probably going to get honda mtf or the Pennsoil schcroymesh. To be honest I'm not picky about the brand. As long as it's name brand and itsee designed for Mt im good.
so here is the main question. How much oil should I buy? I'm going to order online. Returning will be a bitch. And I really hate waste. No Muda! Ah no.

you know the 10w30 would still be just fine
ive run that on all my 5speed cars over the years
theres no need to spend more money on something thats going to work just like what you have now
but if you want to toss money away then honda mtf would be the way to go 3 qts

its just 2 qts of MTF. if you need to top off, use motor oil. i only need to when i rebuild from empty. usually have some left over when i just change out.
i recommend honda MTF. even the new stuff which is designed for higher mpg and thus thinner. its advanced compared to just throwing motor oil in. the shop manual specifies motor oil because there wasnt MTF before... and motor oil quality (additives, chemical contents and what not) arent the same then as they are now.
use the proper oil meant for transmissions.

Honda Service Manual calls for 10w30 in that transmission.
If you buy the special Honda trans fluid it is likely just overpriced 10w30.
Want to get crazy? Go synchromesh.

Our cable trannys were around before Honda came out with there MTF. Any 10w-30 will work. Personally I use Rotella T5 10w-30 synthetic blend due to its high ZDDP (anti-wear additive) . I've driven my EF with this oil in the tranny cross-country from the heat of Death Valley, to the peaks of the Rockies. Not one issue and butter smooth shifts. Another favorite in the community is GM syncromesh; It's a great oil but also ~ 10$/qt. You can get 2 quarts of the T5 for the price of 1 syncromesh. Either way, both are good oils. Ive only use the Honda MTF in hydro trannys.
