2006 CRV 5 speed with 114k miles. Wife was driving into a parking lot and the VSA, CEL, Exclamation mark indicator all went off. She said the car drove as if nothing happened. I was 400 miles north at the time and didn't have access to the car.
The internets suggested this is common on the k24a, and was the result of a faulty vtec oil pressure switch, or a clogged vtc and/or vtec solenoid filter. I had my wife reset the ECU. None of the lights came back.
I went ahead and bought both vtc and vtec solenoid filters for $15. Now I will show how to replace them on the K24A1
Schematics are good. Unfortunately mine has no torque specs for the solenoid bolts. The RSX vtec solenoid calls for 7.2ft/lb or 86.4in/lb. I used this spec for mine.
Zip tie the PS line out of your way. Remove the PS line bracket as well. One 10mm bolt. Also detach the cruise control unit in the upper left and move it out of the way. Two 10mm fastners
Here's your target. Place a towel under the solenoid to catch oil when its removed. Disconnect everything attached to the solenoid. I also detached a crank sensor, and the oil pressure sensor under the solenoid. Notice the wire tie on the right is not accessible from above. I didn't remove the heat shield, instead I cut the tie and replaced it with a zip tie after
Remove the bolts and pull off the solenoid. My filter looks very healthy. I just wasted $8 on a new filter. Clearly a clogged filter wasn't the cause of the CEL.
Cleaned the solenoid and installed the new filter. Installation is the reverse of removal.
I'm still waiting for the vtc filter. I expect it will be just as clean as the vtec solenoid filter. I'll post the vtc filter replacement once its done.
