Default 1996 Civic DX Water pump short bolt length?

Model: Honda Civic DX
Year: 1996
Engine: D16Y7
Mods: Has stock everything for now. I ported the oil pump today and may add a very small shim, just to maintain spec oil pressure with the added bonus of more volume. That's for another thread though...

What I need to know is the length of the shorter, lower left bolt for bolting the water pump to the block. I broke it off while removing the pump and destroyed the broken bit while removing it from the block. I managed to keep the threads intact, however, I need to replace the bolt and cannot find the length of that bolt anywhere. In the FSM I found the diagram and such, but it shows it being the same length, when I know for sure (from a recent water pump replacement) it is shorter than the others.

Thank you in advance,
Matt

I think the Honda engineers were in a practical joke mood when they designed the water pump with one oddball bolt.

Not such a funny joke. What's even worse is how it seems to snap off so often. I've seen multiple threads with the same broken bolt. I think it's shorter because the end of it is close to the coolant jacket (I think that's what it's called) around the cylinders. Anyhow, I appreciate those diagrams, but they don't show the bolt I need. It shows the two top ones, but not the bottom left.

I know the bolt is 6 x 1.0 like the others, but I don't know the length. I will attach two photos to show the exact bolt I need. If someone currently has their water pump off can measure this bolt for me, I would appreciate it very much. Otherwise I will just measure the depth plus the thickness of the water pump and try to find something that works.

Thank you again for the help!

Haha ya. I can't believe there's a shorter bolt like this, prone to snapping, that isn't listed in any of Honda's manuscripts. Oh well... I think a 16mm length bolt will do the trick. I will confirm it tomorrow.

In post #4, you posted a diagram of the water pump from an online Honda parts dealer. Parts #19 (6X20) and #20 (6X60) are different size bolts. The pic below shows the accompanying text that indicates the water pump is secured by one #19 bolt and five #20 bolts. This publicly available information clearly indicates that one bolt is shorter than the others, though I wish this were also stated in the service manual.

Thank you RonJ,

The fact that it is not listed in the service manual is what's frustrating for me, but I can see now that #19 in the photo is for the bolt I'm looking for. However, the threads in the photo do not go to the head as they are supposed to on the original bolt. Anyhow, the 6x16mm bolt I picked up will do the trick. I've heard of people running their water pump minus this bolt and never had a problem, though I would highly recommend against this.

Thanks again!

Don't forget to replace the "special bolts" as directed in the FSM

If you can't get the correct bolt get one of the longer ones, spin a nut on it and hacksaw it to the correct length chase the tread with the nut you spun onto the bolt before cutting it. 94

The 16mm I picked up will work, but the correct length is 22mm, and that wraps it up here!

Thank you to everyone who helped!
