So I notice the perimeter of my 94 f22b1 pan is covered in oily crap. I'm aware of what's needed to remove the pan but I have conflicted information on where and how much permatex/honda bond to apply. Several youtube videos show slathering on a thin layer on both sides of the oem gasket. Several forum posts on other sites show like 6 single locations but fail to say if it needs to both pan and block or pan or block etc. So I'm asking what is the best way to do it without leaks or install problems

Yep, those are the instructions I followed. As a tip, make sure you don't have any of the metal rings that are round the bolt holes still stuck on the block. If you do and put a new gasket on, it will cause a major leak. I learned from experience.

 

If there are the metal rings wich side do they go on if at all?

 

That doesn't really matter. They should be in the holes in the gasket. The factory gasket will have new ones built into the gasket. If you go with an aftermarket gasket like Felpro, they don't generally have these metal rings.

i did mine when i changed my front seal on my 97. i cleaned the hell out of the block and used brake clean on a terry towel to rinse everything of grease residue. put two dots on the corners, mostly to help keep it seated in there tightly. never had a problem. the rings are just supports to help prevent over torquing and "squeeze out" of the rubber gasket. follow the procedure. it's never steered me wrong yet. good luck
