Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
1997 Integra with b18a1 stock with a log manifold and 60 trim turbo. I just do not know what to do with the waste gate. It blows right onto the radiator. Started melting a bit of the radiator. Any ideas?
Re: Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
let me be the first to react
how the **** do you have a turbo'ed car and don't understand that you need to re-route the fire shooting out of your wastegate? holy ******* ****. Post some pictures, we need to see this.
in all seriousness......
buy another flange that matches the exit of your wastegate....
Then buy the correct size piping with the needed bends(usually the same size as the wastegate) and bring it to an exhaust shop and tell them what you need to do, shoot it to the ground (exit should be about level with the bottom of your oil pan) You can run it to your downpipe, if you want, personal preference. I run mine towards the ground. replace your radiator and stay the **** out of boost.
post a picture of your bay/wastegate/radiator, and i'll link you to everything you need.

Re: Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
Well, he may simply not know exactly how a wastegate works and the temperatures of the exhaust gases that are escaping the wastegate valve once the spring opens up.
He also needs to understand that in many cases, if it's plumbed back into the downpipe at to aggressive of an angle, how that can seriously affect the way boost behaves due to exhaust gas turbulence.
But, he'll now be wiser as he must get a new radiator and either fabricate or go through the muck of finding the exact pre-fabricated wastegate dumptube to both A) work with exhaust manifold, B) not destroy his radiator, and C) have the right material flanget to mate with the particular wastegate he has...
So sure, it was a bone-headed thing to do, but... sometimes life has to teach us with a hard lesson. We wouldn't be human without it.
But at least you know this, NAR, so you'll sleep better at night: He'll never make that mistake again. So, there's somewhat of a silver lining there.
Re: Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
Here's a picture of the wastegate. I bought it used. Fixing it as I go. Need the wastegate venting properly, boost controller moved away from turbo, drain and feed line fixed. Drain line leaks. The feed line has the "t" right off the block. Going to move it to the firewall. Also, I may need some ARP head bolts. Might have some head lift, there is oil below leaking from the head gasket are.
I am aware of how turbo and related components work and function, but the previous owner might not have had the same understanding. I have been avoiding boost as much as possible. Thanks for the replies, I'll look through the links.
P.S. Buying a half sized radiator soon. But one thing at a time.

Re: Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
Don't avoid boost! Boost is your friend! Boost is fun!
But man, you say you don't know anything about boost, don't even feel bad. From the sounds of it, you already know more than the PO. Do yourself a favor and make sure it's tuned. With how much Mickey Mousing the PO did...I wouldn't trust that car as far as I could tow it.

Yeah.. Turbo is mounted on backwards for that exhaust manifold, and the "made up" downpipe is kissing the fan shroud, further proving that this is mounted backwards.

A turbine can be mounted backwards to a manifold? Serious question .

Hes talking about what side of the car the downpipe exits. but yes you can either have the downpipe more towards the passenger side vs the drivers side. Certain manifolds are designed specifically for certain orientations (to clear Ac ECT). Logs are generally A/C compatible which uses a drivers side down pipe configuration

Correcto.. :-)
Not all cast logs have that orientation, but in the OP's case, yes.. This was mounted backwards by the original owner
that being said, your intercooler piping will have to be reworked a bit and you may or may not have to notch the webbing on your block if the compressor side hits it. Problem solved, and you'll get to still use your full sized radiator.
EDIT: I can't tell from your photo if your turbo has a 5 bolt discharge or 4 bolt. That downpipe will only work for a 5 bolt turbo.
EDIT AGAIN: I'm also unsure from the photo if you're running an oil restrictor or not but that feed line looks huge! you might be feeding the turbo with too much oil and that's no bueno.
Re: Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
Situations like this are common in my area, where someone starts a project, not really knowing how it works and gives up after failure. Someone like OP comes in, scoops the car for cheap and has to fix all the mess....looks to be a bit of work, but it could make for a nice flip when it's all done.

To add, get a filter on that turbo asap.
Prolly just a ebay turbo its gonna die anyway.
No hostility intended really but if it came with that wastegate, Its some BS turbo thats not worth anything
Re: Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
Ok. Started a new job and have a day off. I have since last post, had feed line and drain lines remade, got the oil distribution block mounted to firewall region (used a stud for the brake master cylinder), tightened the oil pan bolts and seems most the leaks have stopped. The feed line has a restricted fitting (like a pin hole).
I'll have to take some pictures tomorrow. I'll have to wait a paycheck from this new job to get the other things fixed. Bills first and then car parts.
Thanks for all the input! I'll keep all of you up to date as this all gets fixed and the way it should have been from day 1 of install.

Yes. The flange fitting has just a pin hole in it. When I first took it off the turbo, I had to do research on why it was such a small hole. I had no idea a turbo could have too much oil. Haha.
Re: Is there a downpipe with a dump pipe for the wastegate?
Yeah you'll want to stay away from those style fittings. The oil will want to cling to the roof of the fitting and ultimately not provide the turbo with the proper oiling.
