who's been citied for a 'gutted out' cataylic converter?
In my domestic days, I was stopped in my Mustang. The cop claimed he could smell the fumes driving behind me. It's a $500 ticket here in NY. But I had TREMENDOUS luck that night. While the oinker had me stopped, a "shots fired" call went over the airwaves, and he threw my license at me and said "You just got lucky!" And ran to his car.
hmm, maybe fumes are much stronger in mustangs/domestics? i know when i gun it, people behind can smell my fumes (just hope a cop is never behind!)
Thats interesting, I wonder how Turbo affects the emmisions. I ran a test pipe on my old '98 Civic EX w/ the GReddy turbo kit for approx. 10,000 miles and it never smelled odd or different then with a cat. And yes, i have grown up and care about the environment so I'm not running test pipes anymore

God, the fumes are very obvious to anyone who is driving behind you even when you are just cruising down the highway. Remember that catalytic converters remove like 99.9% of the pollution in your exhaust. That means that if you don't have one, you have hundreds of times more smelly pollutants that are very obvious to anyone following you if they have a nose.
I'm not a tree hugger, but I grew up in the days of Stage 3 smog alerts and cancelled P.E. classes, so I hate smog.

Haha, just covering my a$$ from the environmentally aware people on the board, I've gotten flammed befroe for simply asking a test pipe question.
But again, I never smelled anythig odd from my exhaust, guess my sense of smeel is a little off

When we were doing the pre-Expo canyon run in Malibu, it was painfully (read smellily) obvious who was running a cat and who wasn't. I didn't know what anyone who was there had under their hoods at that time, and I was able to pretty much peg who was running a cat and who was running a pipe.
Have you tried smelling it when the engine was under load?
Gansan: Thanks again for the edumacation at the track! Incidentally, Yoshi talks of a "Gansan" driving an ITR in some of the Best Motoring Videos. Is that you or just someone's name that I am unaware of...?
