Default Idle Problem 01 Civic Ex. (searched)

I just did a search and nothing helped really.

Its been going on and off for a while now. My CEL light will come on sometimes and then go off without me resetting it.

Problem: When im driving everything is normal. But when i start the car, let it idle, or stop at a light in neutral my RPMs will be around 1500, surge up to about 1700, go on like this for a few seconds and then drop back down to normal after it stops surging.

Any ideas on what needs to be done? I have a warm day tomorrow (in Michigan) so i might be able to solve the problem. This is my FIRST honda so im not really sure what im doing.

Thanks for your help.

Ps. Pictures would be WONDERFUL if you reply!!!

It could be your idle air control valve (it may be clogged, or the controller could have gunk in it).

this could be another possibility fitting some symptoms you've described.

it's a more recent thread posting, but a rare case on these civics according to the thread.

I'm guessing Matt is dead-on. The IAC is in the throttle body and provides a bypass when the throttle is closed, to finely control the air/fuel ratio at idle. In Iowa where I live ethanol blended fuels are popular (corn, go figure) and we see this causing a gumming of IAC's on vehicles of all mfr. I teach vocational auto mechanics and have seen it on every make of car. The good part is you can usually access the part quite easily and clean it with 20 cents worth of carb cleaner. Cheap and easy and worth a try.

Does anyone know where the IAC is located?
Im trying to find it so that i can clean it and i cant find it AT ALL!!!
And i have a nice 45 degree day in Michigan so today is the perfect day to find my exhaust leak and clean this part.
Thanks!

Part #1 in this picture:

It's that assembly attached to the Throttle Body.

Not a problem. Sorry it took a bit, but I've been rather busy recently.

It's a metal penetrator, that breaks down rust and corrosion. It'll help free up the bolts on the IAC valve. You can get it at places like True Value and ACE Hardware.

I feel your pain, really. This weekend we had 40+ degree weather. Today, snow and 15 degrees. This region sucks.

I found out what it was.

My header had become loose right above the first o2 sensor which was why it was throwing the code and the problem with the idle. I tightened it up and i havent thrown a code or had the problem since. Its been about a good solid week and a half.
