Honda + VW = Why can't we all just get along?
It got locked before I could reply but the goofball that posted the "Hondah VS. VW" thing does NOT represent the views of all VW fans. My first car was a VW, I have owned several of them, and raced a few more. My first "real" Honda experience was when my wife insisted on buying one of the very first CRVs that came into the country and it has been absolutely wonderful. My next race car will likely be a "Hondah", and I am not the only one out here who calls himself a "VW person" and gets the bigger picture. I apologize for the idiots.

I thought that topic was pretty random.
I was seriously thinking about getting a VW after my current civic. But I heard they aren't the greatest choice for autocrossing. That's why I got a CRX. But their engines are extremely over-engineered. They make a chip for the 1.8 liter turbocharged engine that will run 28 psi on stock internals. That's pretty amazing.
a "honduh" certainly can't do that.
haha,
drive safe,

Oddly enough, I met a guy last year who darn near wanted to kick my *** for driving an Acura. Somewhere in a conversation, I mentioned that I autocrossed/tracked, he asked what kind of car. I said "Integra" then he went off on a tirade about how VW are so superior, how he hated Hondas/Acuras, the people that drive them and how they are around an autocross course. I just sat very quietly the whole time... then commented "VWs are nice cars, but if you ever come out to an autocross and run against my 'slow' Acura... you'll find out first-hand that it's not remotely 'slow' "
I've had problems with 1 other VW guy who talked nothing but trash the minute I said "Acura" but the others I've talked to have all been perfectly cool.

My father has owned 9 VW's since 1977, so I grew up in a VW family. My first car was my mom's old 84 Rabbit GTI (I inherited it in 1995) and I loved it. I wish I still had it sometimes... That thing was a champ... Not much power, but any gear, any RPM, and you could pull strongly. Handled forgivingly and precisely (good for a 16-year old) and was as reliable as one could ask of a 10 year old car with well over 100k on the clock.
As soon as I drove his '99 Jetta (which I love the styling of) I knew I wasn't going to buy one. There is no comparison between the older and newer generations, handling-wise. They have gone SO soft. But I still love VW's.
Now I own an Integra, love it, and love Hondas. So yes, we can all get along!

I find the VW vs. Honda argument similar to the Ford vs Chevy of the 60's, and 70's. Every car maker (even Kia) has a close competitor. IT makes things more fun at the track anyway. The key is to not take it seriously like some owner do.

I learned to drive in my mom's 91 golf cabriolet. 1.6L and 93 hp it was slow as hell but man was it fun to toss around. It was extremely forgiving. I can think of a few situations where if had had been driving my teg, I would have killed myself. when I drive it now, I can't stand how slow it is, but who needs more than 100 hp when they're 16 anyway.
My only experience with a VW was my best friend purchased a 2001 Beetle 1.8T. He beat me about three-quarter's of the time in my GSR. I've seen a modded one more recently that was very impressive.

There are new VW's, and there are beat to hell beater VW's. Sadly, there is not much in between. I love the cars, learned on an 84 Golf, but it was such a lemon, and was so costly to maintain, I can never go back. They *look* like they'd be so much fun though....
Honda's vs. VW's, well in all honest truth, I can't stand VW's, I've always had grudges w/ those types fo ppl's cause of past occrunces(bitch kids jealous 'cause i beat there car, so they decided to throw sumthin at my car) wither way, f*** all VW's and hope there cars get messed up or sumthin, sorry about the anger, just cant stand them sorry!!!!

Well then it needs a second cam profile with longer duration and higher lift to start the torque curve going upwards again.
Can't rev past 7K? How emasculating.
That's some good chit!
It's all what you're looking for. I've owned 5 VW's and loved each model less and less and they lost their simplicity and appeal as they got larger, softer and more refined. Nice cars though and I sometimes long for my Jazz Blue (similar to Nagaro Blue) GTI VR6 on long highway cruises or when I'm rowing through the gearbox in the ITR just to stay up with traffic. Mmmmm VR6 hummmm.
You can debate which is better till the cows come home, each has it's strengths and weaknesses, but one thing you can't argue is reliabiality. VW's may be great cars but on there's no way up to the level of a Honda/Acura in terms of quality (initial or long term).
