What makes a good helmet?
Guys,
I have decided to buy my own helmet and I need some ideas...... I would imagine I want a new SA 2000, but you can get the SA 95's on discount. How long are the helmets good for in autocross? Also, I have glasses, which helmets are comfortable with glasses on? Finally, is there brands that are better than others? I always thought bell were the best. Is this true?

(this is funny, I've responded to about 5 helmet related posts lately. anyway...)
For SCCA autocross the 2 most recent standards are good, and the standards are updated every five years. So an SA95 helmet will be good for 4 more years. I managed to get an SA95 Bell M3 basically at cost, so it seemed like a good idea.
I have no idea about the glasses unfortunately. I highly recommend going to a store in your area that carries racing stuff and trying a few on. In addition to fitting your glasses, helmet shapes vary as well. You don't want an uncomfortable helmet.
The best helmet is the one from a reputable company (Bell, Bieffe, Arai, etc) that fits your head.

Buji's right. If you bought your SA95 helmet today, you could use it until the SA2005 standard is released. Oddly the 2000 standard wasn't released until 2001... Anyway, the idea is that if you buy a new helmet at the beginning of its run you can use that helmet for Ten Years! If you break down the cost by year, the SA2000 is much cheaper! Buy the SA2000 and enjoy...
