Default vtec controller for autox

I wondering if a vtec controller for autox will be worth it. Considering that I have the torqueless wonder b16a in my hatch with the usually bolt ons. I know that Jackson Racing has a controller where you can set the activation point at 2500rpm. I figure if I set it that low I will have more power out of the turns. I'm wondering what everyone else thinks about it. Their must be some drawbacks so fill me in fellows.

to have the power come on sooner so I will have more power out of the turn. I figure I could set it low on the course and then return the activation point back to its stock setting when I'm done.

power will not come on sooner, if anything, you will lose power. b16a's are not very powerfull stock, and you will only hurt it opening up the big cam sooner, especiialy that early. sorry, but it's true.

ok thanks for the info Rodney, I guess I will throw away that plan in the garbage. I figured their had to be something wrong with doing it but I really didn't know what it was. So why in the world does Jackson Racing sell controllers where you can set the vtec point so low.

What you want to do with a VTEC Controller is get your car on the dyno and smooth out the VTEC change over. By smoothing out that plateau you might gain 2-5hp in the mid range.

But then again just having this mod will bump you to STS/STX/SM which are very competitive classes.

I believe VTEC also needs oil pressure to be a certain PSI before it engages and I doubt 2500 RPM is enough. Better off getting a V-AFC at the least and tuning.

Rodney's right. The reason why you wouldn't set your vtec to 2500, heck why not 1000 rpm, is the same reason why the car didn't come stock from the factory with only the big cam in the first place. At low RPMs (<4.5-5.0K?) a high lift vtec like cam with its overlap will make less torque than a normal not-so-aggressive cam would. Always being on the high cam can also make your car not run smoothly at low RPMs (think of rough idle, poor drivability, etc. of racecars with aggressive cams). All that vtec does is that it combines the positive effects of a low lift cam for better drivability/torque at lower rpms, with the positive effects of a high lift cam for better breathing at high rpms, while eliminating the negative effects of each (less torque/drivability at low rpms for the high lift cam, and inefficient breathing at high rpms for the low lift cam.) This is putting it simply and I’m sure someone could better explain it in more detail (or correct what I said).
