Thin Ice
Today i went to the Wisconsin Auto Group (www.w-a-g.org) annual Ice Competition on Lake Sinnissippi in Hustisford, Wisconsin the day started off cold and it was around 5 degrees when I got there. There were many people there before me and i was pretty late. I was about to register when I looked up and saw a brand new 2002 subaru wrx fall throught the ice and was sticking about half way out of the water. It was so cold that nobody thought something like this could happen. I was very very dissapointed with what the auto group did to help them, the owner just sat in the car and didnt do anything. There is a channel there and they were the first ones there they should of taken the responsibility into putting up cones showing the ice was dangerous and they should stay off that path. Many people have gone over that before but I never saw it like that. Im glad that both of the drivers got out and were safe but the car will probably be a total loss since the engine was flodded. I cant blame anyone for what happened but it shows how much responsibility they have when organizing such a big event like this.
Typical WRX owner--they think their AWD cars can do everything
That sucks though. I'll go on ice with my ATV, but never an automobile. There are always parts of the ice that aren't as thick, especially on larger lakes and ponds.

If it was my car, I would get a big as winch and super extra long cables soon.
Yank the WRX out before ice melts and that thing goes under water regardless of insurance policy.
If it was totaled, then so be it. You have spare parts if you buy it from Insurance.
This is IF the insurance pays for it.
Racing is not covered by most insurance policies. Therefore it could be a significant loss for the owner.

I'd love to see the insurance claim on a car that broke through the ice in the middle of the lake.
Insurance adjuster: "Why was the car in the middle of the lake?"
WRX owner: "Uhhh...I was...I was..."
What the heck would you say? Say you were ice racing and no way you'd get covered. You could tell them you skidded a few hundred feet out, but that would never fly either.
Or, forget to tell them the car was in the middle of the lake and say it went off on the side while you were skidding off the road. Good luck with that though.

I was there, I was actually doing timing for the event. For more info directly from the source check out here:

It is a 2.5RS, 2002. Clegg on Nasioc is the owner. The car will be covered by insurance it seems at this point. This was NOT on the course, and was before the runs started. He was heading to the other side of the lake to practice. He was lucky it was only 3-4 feet deep there, otherwise it may have been more than a car that was lost. The car was pulled out and put on a trailer, and will be checked out tmorrow I think. Body damage on the right side of the car, but engine is questionable at this point.

Oh, also...
Kamin-the owner is taking responsibility, which he should. There are risks you take when you drive your car on the ice.
Warren-The ice was plenty thick, other than the crack. I've been on much thinner ice and felt safe. IMHO he should've realized there was a crack and not driven there.

Typical Type-R owner -- Bashing any other brand they can think of.
Hehehe The subaru board mentions two things
1) It WILL be covered under comprehensive in insurance.
2) The event organizers knew it was bad to drive over it yet did nothing until after the event to warn others of the situation by putting up cones after the car went through.
And to have cars hitting shore 200 feet away? To have a course on ice 200 feet away from the nearest obsticle? Yikes! The ice racing I've done it's a minimum 400 feet.
I like the fact that it was shallow there (4-5 feet deep).

(Before anyone bashes me, Todd and I compete nationally against each other... and it's been a while since the last driving event so the only thing I can do right now is be tough on a bullitin board)

The fact of the matter was, we were over there to test how the ice would be under the tires we had. Since my co driver was a second driver in the car and never drove it before we thought it was good to get some practice time in before hand. ( and didnt want to do it around other cars for saftey reasons). As someone posted above, this is an area we have drove over before in warmer winters, with NO problem... So it was pretty much a complete suprise when the car went in.
Also the track runs 20 yards from the place we went in, and cars slid out from that corner to within 10 - 20 feet of my car... so its not like we were that far off course..
I am disapointed at WAG's failure to mark an area they knew as being bad before the event started, but I take all the responsibility for this.
Your generalization that I thought because I had AWD meant I could do everything is an example of how inept you are... Thats like me saying every Honduh rice boi thinks they can run 7 second 1/4 miles with a fart can muffler.

But if that's your car, we all feel bad for ya. Mind telling us how you got the insurance to cover it?
did you happen to shut the motor off as soon as it happened? i was thinking maybe the motor's salvageable if you shut it down fast enough - i don't know where the intake on a 2.5rs is, but if it's high enough you may have gotten away with it. or was it just CHER-CLUNK when you hit the water? (simulated hydrolock sound
)either way, i think you should swap in a wrx motor...
good luck.
Todd's just jealous b/c his Type R wouldn't have any business being on ice in the first place.
OT I know, but it was good meeting you out at the Palm Bay autoX this past weekend and putting a face with a name
