Default sidewall flex

93 Prelude VTEC
I have had a set of racinghart 18" rims that weigh about 22lb for a long time now and i have been thinking of going to a 17" gram light with azenis since its a lighter wheel, im bored with the racing harts and the azenis dont come in a size larger then 18 anyway. Not only that tires for 18's are spendy.

FYI: I plan on autoxing next season as often as possible and I have a daily driver..

TO THE POINT
My good friend is telling me just get some good tires like pole positions for the 18's because it will handle better because the shorter sidewall will not flex as much (35 series compared to 45) But I am under the impression that todays performance tire have sidewalls that dont flex as much as they used to so switching to a bigger sidewall will not make much of a difference.
Can anyone put some truth to any of this and maybe make some recomendations?

.. he says look at the profesional cars they run 19" i told him im pretty sure thats so they can run larger brake rotors..

you will notice that just about everyone here runs the minimum diameter rim that wil fit over the brakes, in the widest possible width.

Get some lightweight 16x7 or 15x7 wheels.

just an FYI, if you don't want to go R-Compound and want t super think sidewall, check out the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. They have a 6 layer sidewall and a max PSI pressure of 55 psi.

if i convert to the 5th gen 5 lug i think it brings the hub in about 1/2 an inch, if i do this and roll the fenders should i be able to clear a 225?

Don't bother doing that crazy of a swap unless you have a valid reason to. Just get the proper offset wheels and you'll be fine. I know 5th gen guys who used 38 and 43 offset with 225 15s no problem.

the swap is actualy very easy and i can get the parts for cheap, my car didnt come stock with h22 because it was the S model and i need to upgrade the brakes so its just a little bit more from a junkyard.. but i will look into different offset

225's fit on a 4th gen with the stock hubs and fenders very easily.

some 16x7 wheels with a 40mm offset, with 225/45/16's on my old car

Decide whatever wheels you like for your daily driver, and buy street tires for those wheels. Problem #1 solved.

Slap a second set of tires (Kumho/Hoosier if your autocross class allows R compounds, Azenis if street tire class) onto your OEM wheels. Problem #2 solved.

That's how I would do it if it were me.
