Default SCCA Class?

I went to the last solo2 novice event and right when I was done, I was told I was put in the wrong class. They originally put me in DSP, and then 2 instructors talked about what class I should be in but never told me. They dont allow taped on numbers, and I want to know my class so I can print them on paper myself.

The car is a 1995 Gsr with bolt ons, a b16 transmission, and no interior.

I read the rulebook but pdf files take forever on my computer for some reason, so it takes a long time to go through everything and see what class im in.

Any help is appreciated.

The transmission swap would put you in Street Mod, but the gutted interior throws you into E Prepared. Does your region have a Street Open class? Many regions have a class for cars that don't really fit in the regular classes and are more of a "run what you brung" deal. I'd run there (or EP) unitl you get to the point where you want to be competitive.

Have fun!

Yeah, I was told the transmission swap would put me in SM. I asked the guy when I was registering and he told me DSP. Im only going to novice days till next season. Itd be nice to run with cars equal to mine so I can see comparable times.

That and they charge you for the number print outs, and im a cheapskate.

Dude just print out every possible class that you'd be in and bring'em along, it's only printer paper

Hope you had fun out there, regardless of class

put the interior back in if you have it and run street mod (SM)

look at your regions autox results online and make sure you pick a number that nobody currently has.
get some magnetic numbers and class letters. that is the easiest

I would say that the way SCCA solo classing works is it's *your* responsibility to class your car correctly, not the officials' duty. and it's up to your competitors to protest your car if they think something is illegal for that class.

like others have said..
ya, no interior screws you into running EP. with interior, the B16 trans puts you in SM.
SM does allow you to run no rear seats, fyi.

Sounds like he just got into autox-ing so maybe he's still a little confused on the classing. If he shows up to run cause he saw some cones in a parking lot, then there should be nothing wrong with some people telling him what class he belongs in

Sounds like the locals weren't exactly sure of what classing to put you in, and being that it's your first time out probably didn't care all that much. Unless, you would have knocked one of them from a trophy spot

I can't say I'd honestly protest you, but I might mention your mis-classing in conversation with you for the next time so someone who is **** about the rules doesn't get on your case.

i'm sure you could run SM in your current configuration.
unless you are beating alot of people they probably will not care. just tell them you are learning and you are working on piecing back your interior as the car came stripped.

last summer me and a bunch of friends went down to Norfolk to run an autox (normally run DC events) and just about everyone in SM had a completely stripped interior, no door panels, and a WRX even had half his dash cut off.
the main point was that everyone in that class stripped everything, so nobody was protesting. and unless you are ruining other peoples PAX results then other classes most likely will not complain either.

Thats right.

I asked when I was registering if I was supposed to be in SM and told him I had a different tranny. And was told it wouldnt exactly put me in SM. I was confused and just went along with this guy. I was also only at the novice school, so i wasnt even being timed. But I liked it alot and am going to the next novice race day, and wanted to know what class I really should be in.

Im pretty sure I belong in SM though.

No, the lack of interior takes you out of the SM class and into Prepared. SM is a "bolt-on" mods class where you can make many engine and drivetrain changes, even suspension changes but you must keep the chassis stock and have a full interior (can remove the back seat). Like 88 rex wrote, you may be able to run SM in your region as long as no one has a problem with it, and chances are no one will unless you start winning regularly.

If I were you, I'd just run in EP and not worry about it or see if your region has a Novice or Street Open class where no one cares if you don't have an interior.

Sorry to drag this out but after reading the last line in your last post it seems there is still a misunderstanding and I just want to be clear - you're in EP w/o the interior.

The good thing is it looks like you've got a good attitude and will enjoy autocrossing a lot. Some people get really p/o'd when the rules throw them into difficult classes and forget how much fun it is to just drive the course and compete against yourself.

Haha I just get confused with the rules.

I always though SM was more of the anything goes class. Im reading the rulebook now. I didnt even know there was a prepared section. I thought when anyone mention prepared they where just talkiing about SP.

Yea, I built my car and worried about the classing later. It was more fun to just go out and do it, then to worry about winning a little mug or orange cone.

Although, I hardly have any competition being the only one in my class most of the time........smacking down lotuses in DM

Yes and no. Swaps allowed as long as from some maker of car....i.e. Honda with Honda/Acura. Turbo's allowed. Superchargers allowed. Rear seat removal allowed. Suspension mostly open. I think there is a min weight limit too(maybe I'm thinking of DM). Tires are unlimited also. All basic bolt-on's allowed.

No aftermarket crossmembers though on EF's .............I'm running SM2 regardless next year though . Everyone else does.

SM was built upon Street Touring and Street Prepared rules
from what i've heard, it was basically setup for all the kids showing up with engine swaps, turbos, carbon hoods, lowering springs, etc.
obviously alot of people get into modding their cars before they decide they want to try autocross. so with these "limited mods", they would put them into Prepared classes against basically purpose built Race cars.
so they created SM as kind of catchall class for cars with swaps, yet really not that "prepared"
of course you then get people that will build to the MAX of the rules allowance for the class, and you then have $100,000 E36 M3's running 305/30/15 r comps.
