Re: The Official Formula 1 2019 Season Thread
Had Albon not binned it in FP3 I think he'd have been in Q3. Kvyat just missed and Albon has been faster than Kvyat. Albon's interview was interesting. He seems quite mature, kid might just have a strong future at RB. I really like him.
Gasly needs to pick it up. Yeah hes 6th but RB is starting to get the car working and hes still way off Max.
Seb has had the best of LEC all weekend. Curious to see if that continues in the race.

It's gonna be interesting to see how Max starts trolling the others in Q3 now. I suspect at some point he and Seb will have a coming together and Seb will once again lose his ****.

Gasly setting the fastest lap was purely down to pitting for almost new softs on low fuel in "Party Mode" on the last lap
I think Gasly will come around. I find it interesting his main issue is having trouble putting the power down. I'm pretty sure Gasly hasn't forgotten how to drive an F1 car and the Honda PU hasn't changed enough to cause the issue.
I suspect that the RB chassis issue is with rear end stability on power. When RB indicated they were surprised by the Honda PU I'm guessing they were surprised by the low end power delivery. I'll be interested to see if Gasly improves when the updates come. I think Max's ability allows him to drive around issues much better than average drivers.
I think any talk of Torpedo being moved up can now be rubbished. What a travesty of a race he had. He could have been solidly in the points. Albon was impressive again. I just hope RB are smart enough to leave him in TR for the full season instead of promoting him like some of these armchair TPs are already suggesting.

Albon will be in the RB next year me thinks.
Leclerc should've been on the podium, not Vettel. Seb looks like 2018-19 Carmelo, washed.

Mark Hughes is in agreement
Vettel had set the fastest lap of the race to date a lap after rejoining on his new tyres. Leclerc’s best seven laps later (around 0.4sec-worth lighter) was slightly slower. Confirming that Vettel genuinely did have better pace than his team-mate and it hadn’t just been about strategy and the team prioritising him.
Ferrari dropped the ball here, once again.

You can't compare last time and this time. VET used up his front tyres quickly behind LEC. That didn't happen to LEC in Bahrain because that isn't a front limited circuit. China punishes the front tyres. That's why GRO was not able to get past ALB despite having newer tyres. He used them up following ALB and trying to get out of the way of the blue flags in under 2 laps.
The only session LEC was faster than VET this entire weekend was Q1 where LEC went out and did a second run as the track improved. Just face it, VET was faster than LEC this weekend just like LEC was faster in Bahrain. LEC was a good bit faster than VET in Bahrain too. I suspect the nature of the circuit had something to do with it.

Actually after reading about it I don't think Gasly used a higher power mode. He only beat VET by a tenth or so. The fuel difference would be about a second and the used softs would be 0.5-1 sec difference. They let him know what sector times he needed to beat to get it and he pushed just hard enough to get it. In hind sight that is a very smart way to nab a point.

I hope the fastest lap becomes more focused on stuff like that. I don't want that BS to settle a championship, but I don't mind it influencing that mid-pack type stuff.

I didn't watch the race. Seems that the biggest story was Ferrari team orders and them shooting themselves in the foot again.
