Need help with STS setup.....
Hiya Rev,
I know Josh very well and I look forward to competing against him in STS. Also, Dave is turing out to be a good driver lately in his EP.
I know I have seen your car out a few times at SASCA and the few times I have been to Spokes lately (sorry, I just HATE Tech Ridge, even though it's only 15 minutes from my house). I'm also sure you've seen me....
Thanks for the tips guys, they sure are helping....

i am going to run my wifes 99 Si in GS locally just to cut back costs for the 04' season (i need a sponsor!) to be honest, if i could run a good stock class, i would. i don't know your budget, but even with the ST classes, the costs will skyrocket! this should be considered pretty thoroughly before taking the plunge. $1500? if i was setting my 99 si up for STS, $1500 woulnd;t buy my spring/shock combo. as you stated earlier, your car was basically stock, not prepped to GS rules, so how about prepping it for the limit of GS, then making the move if it deems necessary? shocks alone will make a huge difference. just a thought

FYI - The $1500 is only phase one. This is the amount I was about to spend prepping my car to the limit of GS. I will be spending a lot more as the season goes on.
Also, I know the shocks will make a difference in GS, but even on race rubber I was getting killed by 1.5-2 seconds by Cooper-S' and GTI 20th Anniversaries. The Si has never been considered a competitive GS car but it still has a chance in STS. The car has 83k on it too and the bushings are starting to show thier age along with a lot of other things so I need more then just shocks to prep for GS anyway.

To be 100% legal, you would have to run DSP with that.
It's so trivial though; I know I wouldn't protest it in STS, but National-level competitiors would.

Not necessarily . . . couldn't he remain in DSP under update/backdate, since all '83+ Preludes are listed on the same line for SP?

You aren't required to have a cat-back in any class. In Stock and Street Touring you are required to have a catalytic convertor, but not in any other classes.
And I am almost sure you can run DSP with the 5-lug hubs and knuckles. It would be nice if someone could confirm this . . .

yes they would. you would be protested and could be subject to tickets from the local police if you violate any noise laws. SCCA rules state for all class that the exhaust has to exit anywhere behind the driver.

I dont think anybody at SASCA will protest you, but its a good idea to maintain a respectable decibel level in town, or the club could get denied future permits.

i would!!! there was a Cooper S in STX at nationals that was too freakin' loud. it was louder than Chris Dorsey's EP crx. I never got around to looking at his exhaust, but that thing honestly made my ears hurt while i was working the course. call me a weenie if you want. there is no need to run open headers like that. you'll lose power and torque.
trust me, i don't want to drive around open header. i 'm presently driving my other car around town until my exhaust is done. i was just wondering if anyone would be a dick about it? btw, you don't lose hp on the top end with an open header.(that's HEADER not HEADERS, i have a four cylinder) anyway thanks for the info.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by carl_aka_carlos »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">i would!!! there was a Cooper S in STX at nationals that was too freakin' loud. it was louder than Chris Dorsey's EP crx. thanks for looking out for me about the cops and all. also, i don't think any scca officials would be present to protest. but, once again thanks for the info and the quote from the scca rule book. you must really know your stuff.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by carl_aka_carlos »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

bingo. can't autoX without a lot to run on.
bingo. can't autoX without a lot to run on.
I'll add my two cents to the suggestions. First my Background.
I ran a 00 Civic Si in the San Fran SCCA STS the past two years, I won the rookie championship last year, beating out an very well driven and prepped RSX-Type S. This year I finished 4th, behind a super well driven/prepped 93 Si, a Protege 5 driven by a guy who's been autoXing longer than I've been alive, and that pesky RSX-type S.
My setup was a little unconventional, but worked really well on asphault, and not so well on concrete.
I ran Koni yellows with ITR springs, Compech adjustable rear sway bar, Cusco Front upper/lower tie bars, DC 4-1 header, AEM intake, and a Comptech rear section exhaust.
The suspension wasn't the best setup out there, but it was a great compromise between everyday driving, and autoX. It was a very well balanced setup and everyone else who drove it, loved the way it was so tossable. That being said, the car needed more roll stiffness on concrete where it ran out grip in the front end no matter what I did with the back. Luckily only a few events a year are on concrete for us, so I compensated for it. And in the rain, the car was almost untouchable by the other top guys, the softer spring rates really worked well in the wet.
If you are tall, get the Del Sol seats. They are a direct bolt in, feel 10x better, hold you 10x better, and give you about another 1.5 inches of head room (important with a helmet). A schroth 4 point belt completed the setup and made me feel like I was one with the car.
To summarize this way too long post, The comptech rear sway bar is the first item I'd get, followed by good shocks and springs. the Koni/ITR setup is a great off the shelf item, and for the money I doubt you can beat it. But going with custom GC's or another full coilover would be an easy way to go as well.
Best of luck to you, and carry on the honor of the 99-00 Si's!!

Heck yeah. I love this car. I am, however, the only 99-00 Si that comes out to the local autocrosses anymore. It's a blast to see the looks on people's faces when this "uncompetitive" car (in GS) is killing them.....welllll, at least until these Cooper S' and GTI's started showing up
Sorry all, but I have to toot my own horn here:
In the Si at SASCA events...
1st place G Stock '02 season
1st place PAX (Driver's Championship) '02 season
1st place G Stock '02 Divisional #3 in Houston, TX
On track for:
1st place G Stock '03 season
1st place PAX '03 season
It's been a good run for me and my baby, time to start scaring the STS boys....
