Default Modifying wheel center bore

I am sure someone here has done this. I am picking up a set of mx3 gs wheels tomorrow with hoosiers mounted up super cheap. I've heard hole saw and dremel, dremel alone and take it to a machine shop to machine out the center bore. The only reason im going this route is to save money so I don't think im going to take it to a machine shop. Has anyone here modifyed Mazda wheels to work? What method did you use?

The simple solution would be to run a small spacer to push out the wheel far enough that the hub register doesn't try to slide into the center bore of the wheel. Otherwise, the only way to modify the wheel correctly for proper fitment would be to have the center bore opened up on a lathe. The Dremel method will work, but you won't have a wheel that centers correctly, and the wheel will be permanently altered.

I thought both Honda and Mazda wheels were lug centric which means proper wheel tightening would center the wheel correctly. My street duty k1's and many other after market rims I've had weren't exactly a 56.1mm bore and I never had any problems. As for permanently modifying the wheel, it really doesn't bother me. It's not like we are talking about some expensive wheels here.

And with spacers wouldn't I then need extended lug studs? I'm willing to bet the spacers would probably cost as much as machine work anyhow.

Honda OEM wheels are hub centric. Aftermarket wheels have a large center bore to fit a variety of makes, and then you would get hub rings if you wanted a proper fit. Whats the difference in center bores between the wheels?

I have used different sized flapper wheels to make center bores larger.

I have modified the center bore on a set of miata wheels. I used an air grinder and it was slow work. A dremel might take forever. The wheels work perfectly fine lug centric.

yes - use an air grinder or a carbide head porting bit in my case. it takes about 15 mins per wheel.

the lugs are indeed perfectly fine to center the rim...
