Max wheel Width for SM2??
I need to know the max wheel width you can run(if any ??) in SM2... the damn rule book is a maze to me.
Im looking at Diamon Racing Rims for my 85 Si... I just need to get outa CSP this year... Im to much of a novice and the car is to modded to go back to stock... Those Diamonds are dirt cheap and I know there a little heavy, but I cant afford Pana's or anything else... Im a poor college student... luckly a buddy of mine threw me a number of a company or guy that sells lightly used race tires... Im probably going to end up with Hooser A3S...
Any help for someone thats just plain confused by the SCCA rulebook.

i don't see how moving to sm2 is going to help any. run csp on street tires, don't mess with the car anymore, learn to drive, and then figure out what class you _really_ want to run in.
nate-going to a class with no competition is not the way to go faster.
it would also be of benefit to us trying to help if we knew everything that you've done to your car.

Well this is what I ahve SO FAR.. I raced 2x last season and got waxed hard core due to my front shocks being over worked...
23 mm Tbars
Tokico Blues
Intrax 1.5" lowering springs
Poly bushings
14x6 rims with some Kumho 716s(not the stickest, but there ok for the street)
DC upper strut bar
In the next 3 months my car is getting a MAJOR over haul...
- Tokico Illuminas
- redpepperracing Camber plates
- Ground Controls w/ 400lb springs(maybe 375s not sure yet)
- Light Speed front and rear sway bars... the front is gonna be run pretty loose
Im just to damn tapped for money right now... I might just bight the bullet and pick up a set of Azenis and run with them... I just really want race tires... I see how well these guys run on theres and I just want a set... My buddy was gonna let me co drive his EP 85 Si but he is selling it now..
Its not that SM2 has NO ONE in it, its just I am going to be putting a cam in the car sometime soon also and that will throw me out CSP, + olan on doing all kinds of port work to my intake mani and boltig on a bigger Tb, from what I understand that throws me out CSP too...
CSP usually has the guys clicking off the fastest time of the day in a Mildly prepped 91 CRX is and a 84 Civic S thats prepped to hell and back.... I wish I had something stock to drive so I could just take the time and learn, but everybody in the stock class in my area runs on Rs.. bah, maybe ill just co drive my friends 88Hf with a ZC turbo this year and just finish up the work on my car...
/me so confused on what he wants to do.

This is not why you got waxed. Save your money, attend an evolution school weekend, and leave the car as is and learn how to drive it better.
Well this is what I ahve SO FAR.. I raced 2x last season and got waxed hard core due to my front shocks being over worked...
I want too, but I need the shocks.. I lowered my car to far and the fronts are pretty much gone... Im getting a steal of a deal on a set of unused Illuminas... At the very least I will ahve the camber plates and Illuminas in before the season starts... I gotta do some restoration on this car... the motor is fresh and I wont find a shell as clean as this for a reasonable price...
bah, I should known i was gonna hear "become a better drive before you mod you car"..... I like to just mod it and learn along the way(thats how I learn)... I just cant wait for my friend to come out in his 84 Ta... he thinks this thing is gonna mop the floor and be faster then the Vettes that run in my area...

replace the shocks, put your factory springs and torsion bars in, pull of the STB, and use the money you save on a decent set of tires and put them on stock alloys. 205/55/14 should work just fine. If you really want to learn how to drive do this.
If you dont really want to learn how to drive and just futz around, do whatever you want.

you haven't done enough to your car to warrant not going back to stock. go back to stock, run on some falken's, use the money you save for an evolution school. you'll go much faster through that route then the "mod like hell, and try to learn while i'm at it" route. these guys that are mopping you up didn't waste time and money modding a car without learning to drive first.
money buys fast cars, practice/discipline/seat time/education gets fast drivers.
you're posting this in the rr/ax forum. this forum arguably has the highest number of ultra-competitive people. we want to win. we are very focused on this one goal and since most of us aren't rich we address this goal with the most cost effective approach possible. it isn't by chance we all agree that the driver and improvements on the driver will yeild the greatest results with the smallest outlay of cash.

nate-who drove his car stock on all-season tires
I'd say dont need to undo the mods to your car and go to stock. Just dont mod your engine with cams/porting etc... Stay in CSP, run a few more events on your current setup including the street tires and LEARN. Get to know the people in your class (and others), they will have some invaluable advice for you. Meanwhile, save your money for some wheels and race tires and perhaps after at least another 5-6 events and a couple of schools, move to race tires. I see this all the time. Rookies rushing out to buy race tires, then instead of getting beat by 10 seconds, they get beaten by 7 seconds...
LOL...good one...

I knew I get all of these responses....
Im still going thru with modding my car... to tell you the truth I dont HAVE any of my stock susension parts left over... I'm going to finish the mods on my car and just run this season on Azenis in SM2... I know I need seat time... alot of it.. I wish there were some free schools in my area.
As for my buddies TA.... his car is gonna be a allmotor monster... he's already said he's gonna have way to much motor...
Hes gonna co-drive my car with me this season... his car wont be done till next season.... Im gonna hit all the smaller non scca clubs in my area too so I can get seat time...
Im sticking with my plans for my mods... why... I donno, ive been thinking about this set up for years, its just finnaly I have the time and money(barely) to invest it in my car... If my Del Slo wasnt my sisters car(my winter ride while shes in school) Id take it out, I could only see th elook on her face if I told her I was autoXing her car.... Its a Auto and I hate how under powered it is... but maybe thats what I need.... if I could only find osme cheap 15"s or 14"s id be set... the ones I have now ... 2 are bent.
If any of you guys have ANY experence with these pre 88 Civic chassis you will know that there isnt much travel from the factory, lowering only makes it worse... at least the camber plates can give me a inch or more of travel back.....
Anyone know when there are any Evo Schools in the Pittsburgh Area(ive heard Nelson Ledges?? but I have no clue where that is)
Thanks for the advise guys, I know your trying to help, but... im hard headed and pretty mych everything you guys say(other then seat time) wont get thru to me. Gimmie some time and It will sink in
just smack me around a little more and Ill come to terms with you guys.[Modified by CRX8Grand, 11:52 PM 2/6/2003]

while you have barely enough money to do the mods that you want (read: not need) you could put this money towards seat time, events, and schools. There is no such thing as a "Free" school. Lots cost money to rent. Good instructors are not cheap.
You will spend over $400 on a weekend of evolution schools but it will improve your times more than any $400 you could spend on your car will.
I am always skeptical of people's cars that are "gonna" have way too much motor and "wont be done till next season" etc etc......
Just put the azenis on the car and run CSP (or whatever) if you want to learn how to drive. If you dont want to learn how to drive and just want to futz around, buy camber plates and cams. Junkyard stock suspensions can be had for next to nothing at the junkyards.
So which is it?

I looked at when the Evo schools are coming to Nelson Ledges(I run in the SteelCities Div)... thats the closest thing to me... If I could only find a damn price on them....
I want to become a serous AutoXer but, this car has street duties and the power bug bit me... I might have to bite the bullet and take my sisters Sol out to the Evo school in March(funds permiting)... Season doesnt really start in our div till May... I might see if a buddy of mine is going to be AutoXing his Civic Si Hatch again this season, maybe I can co drive his car(stock class)....
I just gotta sneak this past my parents that Im speding 400 some dollars on a school to learn how to drive... they already didnt like the fact that I went to 2 solos last year.. but I think they are warming up to it... heh... at least im not doing drugs...
baaaaaaaAAhh so confused.... CSP ... SM2 gah, so confused...

I said it in my last post. However the cost will vary on location and will be over $400 for two days. This is the best money you can spend on your car *if* you are serious about driving.
And any of that extra power you add??? Completely worthless on an autocross course at your experience level. The wrong choice of parts could even make your car slower (such as a cam geared toward big top end power).
Just because the car has street duties doesnt mean it cant be competitive. My advice is to return it to stock but if you dont do that leave it as is and put new tires on it.

well as I said I gotta atleast get the shocks and camber plates so my car has shock travel yet agian...
I think the Evo School is one day... im not sure... my on buddy told me it was a little over 200 or so... which is damn feasable....
Its sinking in... slooooooowly... thanks for beating into my head RJ lol

a little over 200 per day. Figure 425-450 per weekend, plus hotel room saturday night, and food. You already have tokico blues - these are a decent shock. Get some stock springs from the junkyard and you will solve your shock travel problem i'm sure.
Uhhh, my Tokicos are blown in the front... I have torsion bars in the front too... there a damn bitch to get out of a running car, I could only imagine how stuck those thing swould be in a yard car....
most yard suspensions are dissasembled and taken out of the vehicle. At least at decent yards, and if you call ahead they will pull them for you. Or ask racers (here even) if they have stock torsion bars. Same thing with the springs.
Just buy more tokico blues, they're cheap.

But I want 5 ways
Im getting them for like 350 off a local guy, He has a garage full of parts. probably why i want to keep adding suspension crap to my car..

Here's what you do.
On a Saturday, go to your local junkyard. Get all the necessary parts you need to put your car back to stock. I know you live in Pittsburg, but down here in MD, Hondamans has all the parts you need.
Once you get the parts you need, spend Sunday swapping them out.
Monday, put your aftermarket parts on eBay. You'll make money if you do it right. With that leftover money, go to an Evo school.

AJ should know - he did it right the first time - went to Evo school, bought a CRX, kept it stock, and is going back to another evo school. He will be kicking my *** next year.

RJ, don't worry, you'll get rid of that Saturn soon enough. Your time will come.

I'd also like to point out the fact that I had a mentor (Eric Carman aka Crosser).
He put me on the right track. If he wasn't there, I would still have that stupid riced out turbo Civic and would do very poorly in SM. Learn from people who have done it. They will all give you the same advice.
good luck,

saturn ownz j00!!!
If it had a decent set of shocks and some hoosiers and some development time it would be very competitive in GStock nationally. I lack the funds for custom shocks and hoosiers an the time for development........
Doing 6 or 7 open track events last season sapped my autocross time/budget. I think i made 8-10 events all year. I think i did like 40 the year before.
