Default Khumos

Which tire do you prefer the never Khumo or the older V700?

I am planning to buy the old ones. Do you have any recommendation? I am running on almost finished RA-1 and I want something that sticks more, short of a Hoosier.

Popular opinion seems to be that the new Kumho isn't very good. Although, Dave Skultety (a very competent driver in a new SSB RSX) likes the new Kumho. He's the only credible source I've found that gave them a thumbs up.

I autocrossed on them in a D Stock Celica GT-S and honestly thought they sucked. The car owner agreed and has started buying Hoosiers AFAIK (celica73, care to chime in here?)

Isn't the new Ecsta compound supposed to be available in the next month or so?

I guess it depends on what size you are going to. The new 225-50/14 seem to work better than the old 205-55's. Probably due to larger footprint. So if you are going to much larger size, I don't think you will be disappointed

I went with the new Ecsta V700 because they come in 235/45/13 where as the Victoracers only come in 205/60/13. They are my first set of R tires so I can't compare them to anything but Kumho 712s.

I forgot - Oscar here also likes them, and he's certainly a credible (and at times embarassingly fast) source of info.

Personally I like the feel of Hoosiers very much, there's lots of usable slip angle. They really are like crack, very addictive, and very expensive. The downside of course is that they "heat cycle out" before they run out of rubber.

Oscar, have you run yours in the rain yet? I've still not got rain tires and sure could use some. Cha-ching!

Rice, obviously the dirt stockers would be the ultimate WET tire. Ithink a good intermediate/wet wouild be the RA-1's in a 205-50. They come with 9/32? full skid where the Kumhos are 6. I've driven the ecsta's in the rain. Very scary when down to the wearbars on a 2100lb CRX; thought I'd never make it to VIR that morning!

Designed to deliver Kumho's ultimate level of "dry" road performance while maintaining good wet traction, the ECSTA MX molds an advanced silica tread rubber compound into a directional tread pattern that features massive, stable blocks to increase cornering traction and steering response, while four large circumferential and multiple directionally-aligned lateral grooves resist hydroplaning and enhance wet traction. Internally, the two, wide steel belts are reinforced by spirally-wound nylon cap plies to provide excellent strength, uniform ride quality, and Y-speed rated (186 mph) capability while the sidewalls are tuned to resist lateral deflection to provide handling control and feedback

yes I heard that all the new stock of tires, will be the new compound. And this is much better than the old ecsta compound, near hoosier. I was down in rainy Gainesville for the second SEDIV, I had a blast and results should be up soon.
