Default HELP me get started!!! PLEASE

Hello o knowledgable ones,
I was hoiping some of you could help me out.... I am getting started into Auto X/SCCA events. Now i working on deciding on a car. My budget is limited, so keep that in mind. I was thinking of a crx sheel, 88-91 hatch, or 92-95 hatch. Can you all let me know which you like better e.i. body roll, cost, motor swaps. Also, there is some limitations power making/aftermarket wise? Can you let me know what thats all about. Any and all info you can provide will be appreciated.

look at the FAQ at the top of the forum. You will find:

- how to find your local scca region
- what modifications are allowed for each class
- where each car is classed

Read over that and go from there. A 2nd gen crx is an excellent choice for stock class, as is a Sentra SE-R, Saturn SC2 (1992 only really), and so forth.

You will find its a lot of personal preference. Some people really like CRX's other like the Oldsmobile SCX, others RX-7's. The best thing to do is get a car, don't throw a bunch of money into it, and LEARN HOW TO DRIVE. You may find out you hate FWD and want AWD or RWD. Its hard to explain but you have to find whats best for you, not what we like. So get out there with something, anything, and drive. Everything else will fall into place.

Oh, and read the class rules to find out what you can legally do to the car in each class. However, being new I would strongly recomend staying stock for a year.

Check the SCCA site for nationally competitive cars (ie. check the top 5 cars in each class). Compare those cars to your budget. Also, avoid winning cars that nobody else is driving. It's usually better to start out with a car that's well sorted so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

Nobody here is going to answer all of these questions for you I'm afraid.

If you want to drive in a class that allows mild but popular modifications later, a 89 Civic Si Hatch (lightest of the 88-91's I believe) seems like the best bet for STS. CRX's get the boot from STS and SM for being 2 seaters. 92-95's are a bit heavier depending on model, but if you want to go into a heavily modified class later, there's quite a bit more available for that body style, although there isn't a real lack for the 88-91. Like everybody else said, read the rules, decide where you want to be in a couple of years (seriously, I wish I did) then make your decision. Then get as much seat time in whatever car you can muster as soon as possible. After 3 years I feel like I am just starting to really learn how to drive well, instead of just fast and stupid. Unless you are loaded with buckets of cash, spend the money on seat time, instead of mods. Just make sure stuff like brakes, ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rods alignment, and bushings are well maintained. I was wasting a lot of money on mods for a long time, and waiting for stuff like that to break or be obviously bad As I have gotten the stuff that I thought wasn't that important done, it has probably done more for my driving than any other thing I have done to the car, including my motor swap. Good tires should be the first real mod you perform. After you learn to control the car on crap tires, the move to good tires will amaze you. But if you go straight to great tires, you will take MUCH longer to learn to drive well, because they will mask you mistakes.

BTW, most if not all of this info, and a hell of a lot more, is available in the FAQ and through searching this and other sites, many of which are listed in the FAQ. Do your homework, you will learn alot more than if someone hands you all the info. Have fun and good luck
