half shaft install tips?
i'm having unusual difficulty gettin my new half shaft to seat in the trannie. i checked to see if it was the correct one and it is and everything checks out. i know u have to just force it till it goes, but an hour later its not in and i'm wondering if anyone has any tips/tricks to gettin this thing in. i had to do the other side earlier in the year and it only took 20 min. what gives?

Last time I did axles, I supported the hubs with jackstands to get the axles straight in line with the tranny. They slide right in. I didn't do it that before & it took an eternity.
its just the half shaft correct? not the axle connected to the half shaft?
it should slide right in, try to center the set ring and just push.

i know that people say not to hammer on an axle, but when i did mine it wouldn't go in a well. i think the snap ring at the end was a little too big, but we couldn't crimp it more. what i did was this:
1. compressed both CV joints so there was no slack.
2. took a dead blow hammer and gave the axle a few good whacks.
2-3 whacks with the dead blow hammer got the axle to seat in nicely. i haven't had a problem with the axle yet and its been like 4 months.

day 2-i took the clips off that have to seat in the trans. the old one went right in. the new one went in as far as it did last night with the clip on. even tho they look the same and measure up, i think its the wrong one. i'm gonna take it back and get another one.

Nice save. I just had this problem as well (axles not going into tranny). However, I had the right axle. The outer splines on the outside of the clip had deformed somehow
. I had to file those bitches for 20 minutes. It then went in without a huge fuss after I kicked the fenderliner (unrelated story or frustration and anger).
Glad you didn't have to resort to such tactics.

I had this problem... it turns out I had the half-shafts reversed from left to right (right half-shaft on the left axle and vice-versa). Nice of Honda to put a large shoulder on the longer half-shaft so I wouldn't damage anything in my futile attempts trying to pound them in, all the while insisting that they were the right way around.
Don't be like me kids.... If someone suggests that something might be wrong, maybe you should check it before you force things.

ok ok, i should have added a disclaimer to my post about "persuading" the axle in.

-make sure that everything fits correctly first. take off the snap ring and make sure the splines go all the way into the tranny and all the way into the hub.

yea, that was the tell tale thing that i did. i took the clips off and the incorrect one wouldn't go any farther than it had been.
