The Halon system is a gas setup and requires NO cleanup after the event. The downside is that you must exit the car promptly since the Halon is toxic at worst, but stops Oxygen absorption for a short time. Cost is not cheap and you cannot refill the bottle yourself. It is highly effective in cars with the windows up and in underhood fire suppression.
AFFF is an excellent system as well. The positives are that it is completely non-toxic and does not impede breathing. You can recharge it yourself and there is no environmental impact either. The downside is that you will spend time doing cleanup. Cost is currently competitive with Halon and both systems use similar mechanical components and locations.
My all-time favorite, though messy, is Purple K. In the 2.5 pound handheld it is very effective but must be used once you are able to leave the car. Cleanup can be time consuming, but the stuff does its job.
A good 5 pound Halon or AFFF system will cost you ~$300. A Purple K extinguisher sells for under $50. Accessories are not considered in these numbers. Several sanctioning bodies virtually require the Halon/AFFF systems for good reason-they can be setup to trigger automatically or by means of a simple release handle. Another plus, using accessory devices is that these systems can be pointed at various parts of the car at the same time. Winston/Nextel Cup cars have 2 onboard units, with one specifically for the fuel tank area.

Happy Thanksgiving.
